Anyone NOT having an NT scan?

It seems like EVERYONE is having one done!

We've decided not to. Our OB said that we absolutely could if we wanted to, but with no family history and us being so young - he doesn't feel that it's necessary. He also mentioned that the results may not be as accurate with twins anyways. In the end, it wouldn't change anything with the pregnancy no matter what the results would be.

Anyone else??

Re: Anyone NOT having an NT scan?

  • Us! We declined everything, except I do want to find out the sex, besides that I don't want anything!

  • we just went in and had the u/s, but declined the actual screening, blood tests, etc. my insurance stinks so it was an opportunity for us to get a great u/s.
  • We are not having an NT scan. We decided that regardless of the outcome we would move forward with the pregnancy. I'm a worrier and I know the results can be inaccurate, I wanted to avoid that as well. I'm a little jealous of the ladies who have had another chance to see their little ones:) but I think in the end it was the right decision for us.
  • I am not having any of that done.

  • We're not for a few reasons. A - it's not covered by insurance. B. It isn't reliable enough to do anything but scare the crap out of us - I don;t want to know the odds of something, it will just make me over analyze. I have heard so many stories of people getting low odds and then having everything turn out fine. and C. - we don't have any family history and we aren't over 35 (so close, though) so the doctor didn't think it necessary. She recommended doing the anatomy scan at 20 weeks if we were going to pick one or the other to pay out of pocket.

I guess we decided we weren't going to terminate the pregnancy based on odds so there was no reason to just do the NT scan. I know me and it just would have worried me to death to know the "odds".

We did do the 2 part blood test (1 done at 12 weeks and the other at 16 or 20?) that will look for markers for a few birth defects then we'll do the anatomy scan so we can be prepared if anything needs to be prepared.

  • We are this time.  But we didn't with DS.

  • We decided to opt out from all of the testing. We would love our baby no matter what and it just was an automatic no for the both of us.
  • I didn't my ob doesn't offer it unless you have family history, and then he refers you to another ob for the testing.

  • We are not doing it for many of the reasons listed above. Years ago, my BIL/SIL had results that were indicative of Down's, but our nephew turned out fine. The whole family worried for nothing for several months. It was an easy decision for us. We will love and care for our baby no matter what, so I'd rather not stress if it would all be for nothing.

  • I'm not... I'm already a worrier... and with my last baby, they mistakenly told me she'd have down syndrome (due to incorrect dating). So, i spent two weeks freaking out.

  • Jumping in here to say that besides the 1,000th time that this has been posted in the last week or two, I really find it a bit offensive when people make the comment that "we wouldn't terminate regardless of the results" as if those who chose to do an NT were using it for that purpose.  Or "we love our baby no matter what" as if those who get poor results don't love their babies as much.  I have seen this over and over on this board, and I think it almost sounds a bit condescending.

I'm not directing this at anyone in particular, since I've seen those exact responses on almost every NT scan post.  I did have the NT scan done, not because either of our families are high risk, but more because I'm AMA (barely!)  The doctor recommended it, and regardless of the results, we also would not have terminated and we also would have love our babies just as much.  We would have also been very prepared, had the test indicated strong odds towards one thing or another.

Sorry...most days I let those comments go, but today is one of the days that they really bugged me.
