Help Ladies (decorating question)

I posted this on the nursery board. Does anyone have any thoughts/advise over here? I have a feeling I might not get much feedback on the nursery board. I am worried I will hack the curtains up, not like what I wind up with and have NO curtains...

Re: Help Ladies (decorating question)

  • oh man, I wish I could help but you lost me when you started talking about different kinds of fabric!  Crafty, I am not.  Hope you get some helpful responses :)

  • I would stick to a heavier fabric like a canvas. It will hang better with the sailcloth fabric. Have you checked out the Premier Prints collection on fabric.com? Cute fabrics for kids.

I think it will look fine. If you're unsure you could try making a pattern out of paper or make a drawing to scale.

  • I would agree with the pp about mixing light weight fabric and heavier fabric.  I would be afraid that it would not hang right and would pull.  I think that I would edge the heavier fabric with the light weight fabric and put the green ribbon between the two.

  • I'm only a step and a half away from using a staple gun, no help here!

  • I agree about the fabric weight, quilter's cotton is fairly lightwieght and wouldn't hang right unless you were going to put a backing on it then line the whole curtain. What would probably look good from a colour blocking perspective is to do what you said and remove the tabs, but instead of adding it as a panel, you could do one of two things:

    1. Make the valance with scalloped edges, and at the lowest part of each scallop, sew on a tassel or a faux crystal. The layers between the valance and curtains add dimension. I tend to go for solid valance on pattern curtain, or solid on solid, just because it looks incomplete. If you like this route, I would back the valance in a colour from the pattern (like the green trim), but not the pink from the curtain. You could make it look finished with the green ribbon on the edge of the valance too (it's still okay with the tassel or crystal).

    2. Take the floral and turn it into tiebacks. You could do a wide band to hold the curtain closed, either pulled to the side or middle, and use a large button to hold it closed, edge the band in the trim. If you want to really dress it up, use the fabric to make oversized bows with long tails; sew this independant of the tieback and secure it so it won't come undone and make it so it can either clip on or button on the tie back.

I look at the design sites quite a bit, this seems to be what they are doing right now. The nice thing is, if the floral doesn't grow with the room, the pink will and you can change out the trimmings.

    hth, and good luck!

I was planning on lining it and debating the backing on the quilter cotton. I am now toying with the idea of just using pink muslin. You are right, I have seen several solid/solid panels out there.

This was my very first thought and plan (and I wasn't worried about the tab since the valance would cover it - but I didn't find any patterns I liked and I was worried it would look funky if I just winged it. I wanted to make a double scallop so that inbetween the scallop was a little peekabo scallop. Does that make sense?

  • Totally makes sense. Lining it will give the cotton form and make it hang nicely. I do like the peekaboo scallop idea (like colour shadowing). I make patterns out of newsprint for designs like that because you can accordian the paper and make the scallop uniform. I see stuff I like all the time - I cruise the high end stores for ideas (like Neiman Marcus home) and figure our what I want to do, and then make it. I have only ever used patterns for clothes.

You should post when you're done, I'd love to see it! I've got some sewing waiting, curtain panels to hem, and window treatments to do for the girl's rooms, pink shiny denim with tulle...and painting...etc...I'm in the early part of staging our house to list. Stick out tongue

You've got some fun things going on, too! I'll PIP when I get a panel done. I think I have given up on altering my current panels and am going to start fresh and also change the pink floral out for the same thing in yellow. I don't want to make it all or mostly out of the yellow because it's a bit much.
