Sleep training, but no crying?

I'm very confused as to how to sleep train, but without letting LO cry??

We also want to pacifier wean at the same time, but I'm thinking either way he'll cry, no?

It's a battle to get him to sleep and then he's up 3-6 times at night, either for the pacifier, sometimes to nurse, or just wakes up crying.

Any tips? DS is 6.5 months old.

I live in Mexico and we don't have all the books that everyone usually mentions, so any tips you can give me here would be greatly appreciated!

  • Some websites to look at:

https://www.pantley.com/elizabeth/index.html (seems to be having problems this morning)

    https://www.pregnancy.org/article/when-your-baby-wakes-frequently-feed-pantley-pull

https://drjaygordon.com/attachment/sleeppattern.html  (for older LOs than yours, but it could give you some ideas).

Neither one is completely crying-free, but it's not "leave the baby in the crib to cry" either.  Sorry they're not clicky, I'm on my crackberry.  Definitely try the Pantley Pull Off as a place to start.

  • Very basically, we put DS in his bed, kissed him goodnight and left the room. If he cried we left him for about 30 second - 1 minute because sometimes he does a bit of a stress release cry or something like that. If it turned into a proper cry we would go straight in, if not we'd still go in after 1 minute.

Sit beside his bed, pat his belly and make shhhh sounds to soothe. Just like you would if you were holding him. If he's still crying at 5 minutes turn him on his side facing away from you and rock him from the hips. When he settles but is still awake stop rocking & shhhing and leave the room. That way they do the actual falling asleep by themselves.

The first two nights were tough, took about 10 minutes for him to fall asleep but after that it just got better and better. By the third night he was only crying a tiny amount and I think on the 4th night he went asleep by himself.

We did this quite a while ago now but even now if he's a bit overtired and finding it hard to go asleep I can just go in and sit with him for about half a minute shhing and patting and he'll instantly go into sleep mode.

So there's a bit of crying with that but it works fast, you're always with them when they're crying, it's not stressful and overall it's less crying that if you do no sleep training.
