Do/did you give LO iron supplements?

At M's 6 month well baby visit, his pedi recommended an iron supplement, but said it's optional and I can decide whether to give him extra iron based on whether I think he's getting enough in his diet. I try to give him 2 Tbsp of an iron-fortified cereal mixed in with one of his solid meals, but apparently one "serving" of cereal is 4 Tbsp, so he's not getting that much. Did you give an iron supplement? I'm not sure what to do about this one.

  • I gave T a multivitamin with iron until she switched from BM to formula (since the formula was fortified).  Once she switched to cow's milk, I never managed to get her back on any kind of vitamin (though I intend to...one day...if I ever remember when I'm at CVS or the grocery store).

  • When DS came home from the NICU we gave him poly-vi-sol for a few months.  We would just in a few drops with his formula.
  • you can buy vit D drops with iron; maybe give it to him with iron one day and without (regular Vit D) the other

  • Honestly, no. I went through our first bottle of poly-vi-sol when he was tiny and barely touched the second. They're such a mess.

That's my concern. I give M vitamin D drops, but the drops we have are incredibly easy - it's literally one drop of a colorless, odorless, tasteless liquid every day. He doesn't even know he's getting it. All of the iron drops seem much more involved.

Maybe I'll just increase his fortified cereal and start meats at 7 months.

  • It's not so messy if you just put the drops straight into your LO's bottle.  Even now, I think I will just put it in one of DD's sippy cups of milk if I ever get around to buying some.

I guess I could put it in one of his daycare bottles. Do you know if it has a flavor? I don't know if he'd refuse a bottle if it suddenly started tasting like cherry or something.

  • We just put the poly-vi-sol in her bottle with the milk.  It dilutted enough that she couldn't taste it.  Once we started giving her cereal we kinda stopped giving the vitamins.  She gets 2 2+ Tbsp servings of cereal a day.
