Toddler vaginitis?

My 20 mo old has been checked for a UTI, that was negative.  But she is clearly in pain.  At the same visit the dr we saw said it was maybe vaginitis, but then left the room never to return (another post, he wasn't her reg dr. and was a jerk.)  She was red, more inner.  She doesn't have diaper rash, and you wouldn't see anything unless you looked at her inner labia which are redder than normal.

I have been doing soapless baths, rinsing when changing diapers, patting her dry, changing her immediately, and changing her during the night to try to help her and it doesn't seem to help her.  She is uncomfortable.

The DR that night mentioned using lotrimin, but that shouldn't be put where her problem is, it isn't an external rash.

Any tips, sorry if this is rambling.  I will put in a call to the reg dr.  but don't really know if they can do anything.

Also, same diapers, etc for 1+ year.

Thanks!

  • I am running out the door, but I wanted to tell you to pour baking soda in the tub in a small pile and sit her on it. Do that 2 times a day and it should help clear it up within 2-3 days.
  • You can also try using vaseline where it is red.  It will give an extra barrior.  My older DD has had tons of issues is that area and we have seen a lot of specialists and this has been recommened.  We also used a prescription ointment for a time.

  • My DD was recently diagonosed with Bacterial Vaginitis.  They cultured it, I forget whtat the bacterial strain was, but it wasn't strep which is what our pedi originally thought.  Symptoms: vaginal discharge and redness in the inner vaginal/labia area. She was prescibed oral antibiotics and it cleared up in about 24 hours.

I am hoping this isn't it, but i am mad as he$@  that he didn't culture it, and at myself for not getting it done.  I think that is where we are headed.

    Thanks everyone!
