PT - Lets talk about Poop

Stick out tongue

AT is pretty much trained at peeing. He has accidents at home, but never at DC. Im guessing its due to him getting busy at home, or just lazy. But once he has the accident he doesnt have anymore the rest of the evening etc.

But the boy will NOT poop on the potty. Hes been in underwear since Monday after bath. He pooped bf bath bc he had on a pull up. He hasnt pooped since.

So veterans......are we just going to have to suffer through poop accidents or just take his lead with it? Im thinking hes holding it unless he has on a diaper. Ive tried the whole "big surprise" thing and he could care less. So Im just waiting for the next big explosion bc i think we are pretty much done with PU.

uh....I may take that back over the weekend. DC sure does a good job with taking him every 30 min. I think we all zone out at home!

Re: PT - Lets talk about Poop

  • Pooping in the potty took a really long time for Eli. He continued to have poop accidents long after he was pee trained.  We just suffered through.  Other than nights, we didn't use Pull Ups.  So we dealt with almost daily poop accidents in underwear.

You need to be REALLY careful about him getting constipated though.  Our pedi said he sees it all.the.time in newly PT kids.  They just don't want to go.  And once they get backed up, it's a process getting it all out, because you don't want them to explode in underwear like you could let them in diapers as a baby.  Eli was on a Miralaxx regimine for a month after he got backed up, and I still give it to him every other day to keep him from doing it again.  So be very, very careful.

Is there a time of day that he 'normally' poops?  I'd try to catch him (or have daycare) during that time and try your best to get him to sit on the potty for awhile, read books or whatever.  Or you might find he poops on one kind of potty better than the other.  Eli liked pooping on his froggy potty at first, I think because there was no splash.  And then just like pees, lots of congrats and a little reward when he does.  I mean, Eli got an entire freaking cupcake for pooping on the potty at first!  You just gotta do whatever it takes, GL!

  • Yeah I think Ive already noticed a little consitpation going on. I bought some OTC pedialax and when Ive had to use it it seems to help. But I dont want to give that everyday. Maybe Ill ask one of the pediatricians about it at work to see what they recc.

He had a poop accident today. The only one hes ever had. It was at school. He used to have specific times he would go but now since weve been PT its really all over the place so Im not sure anymore. Maybe Ill pay close attention this weekend to see if there is a pattern anymore.

Oh & believe me Im prepared with reeses as soon as he goes. He can have whatever he wants if he goes. We used to do that with pee and now whe he goes he talks about M&M's but usually forgets aobut it by the time were done washing hands. So hopefully it will be the same with the poop!

  • DD does this too. Lately her timing has changed though so it's not in the time when she's wearing a pullup at nap or bedtime. So we notice her cues and put her on the potty and she screams the whole time she's pooping that she doesn't have to go and wants to get down. You'd think we were killing her-crying, screaming, etc. Then she poops and it's all better..I guess at some point they get it huh? Tongue Tied

  • DD was pee trained for about a month before she was poop trained (we are far from night trained).  I was terrified of her becoming constipated (she's so stubborn) that I was content to let her tell me when she had to go and to ask for a diaper. I started reminding her about one week out that as soon as Christmas was over there would be no more diapers and she would have to poop on the potty. So far it's been a success!  Good luck!

Miralaxx is a very common suggestion from pedis.  Seems like every other person over on the toddler board uses it.  It's not a laxative, it's a stool softener.  So it's perfectly fine to use every day for an extended period of time.  It doesn't make them explode or have to go immediately.  Eli's been on it since December.  Jessica is using it for C too.  Just this week we are trying fiber gummies instead, we'll see how that goes.

  • Nora was scared to poop in the potty.  She would wait until nap time and then poop when she woke up because she had a diaper on.  Since she was scared (or it hurt, I'm not sure?), I said, just let me know when you have to go and we will put a diaper on.  This at least got her thinking and knowing when she needed to go and to let me know when it was time.  I bought her a baby doll for the first time she went in the potty.  It was a long road, even after that, and we went through a lot of poop accidents (and still occasionally have them).  After the baby, we actually got a prize bucket for her and let her pick out a tattoo (which she was obsessed at the time), 2 stickers and a candy prize for when she pooped.  We made it a HUGE deal.  And would say things like "BOOM" when it hit the water and made a sound or just tried to make it fun.  Ugh, it was soooo hard for us! We started about a month after she turned 2 and just now, in the last 2 weeks, she has begun to tell us "i need poop" and we go on the potty.  Before, I used to have to watch her like a hawk and see when she started pushing or if she tooted a lot, I would know to get her on the potty.  Sorry, that was long, but I was just trying to think of everything that worked for us!  GL, it's not easy!
