Cloth Diapering

Should I throw in the towel?

I am so frustrated with my CDs.  I have a stash of about 20 pockets--mostly FB OS (medium) and Rumparooz, along with a few prefolds and fitteds.  Over the past few months, I've found that almost all of my FBs have started leaking.  I don't think its from buildup, because my Rumparooz never leak.  My DD is skinny and the FBs leave huge gaps along her thighs.  I have two newer FBs that still work, but the rest have totally konked out.  The Rumparooz are also fairly new, and I'm afraid that they will start leaking at some point, too, as they stretch out.  I looked at the old and new FBs to see if it looked like the elastic was totally stretched out, but they don't look different.

Now I am left with about 7 diapers in rotation, plus a few prefolds.  I like the prefolds, but the ones we have are too big for DD and I think they make DD very uncomfortable.  I do laundry twice a week in our building's basement.  Each load is $1.95.  Since I can't do extra rinses, etc., I have to run each load twice.  I throw the inserts in with another load of clothes to dry, so I save that money, but thats still $4 a load, plus running down to the basement 4 times each time I do laundry.

We just found out we are expecting #2 and finances are tight.  I am freaking out about buying even more diapers and having them fail, and the cost and logistics of having to do laundry twice as often.

I have to decide whether to: give up on CD'ing entirely and sell my stash (DH would probably like this, he doesn't really support CD), buy a bunch of new Rumparooz and hope that they continue to fit, buy all new (smaller) prefolds and covers, mail the FBs to someone to replace the elastic and hope that that was the problem, or sell my stash and sign up for a diaper service ($35 a week for one child).

What would you do?

  • I'd strip the FBs anyway and see if it helped at least.

  • I would try different brands of diapers maybe the FB's just aren't the right fit for your LO.  how much does she weigh? maybe they are still too big for her.  are you putting them on the smallest setting?  maybe she is a heavy wetter and you need to invest in some hemp inserts for extra absorbtion.  maybe strip them just to test it out.  are you changing her every 2 hours?

I think there are a lot of possibilities for you to try before giving up.  But, I'm sorry it's frustrating for you, CDing should be fun!  Hope it works out.

  • FBs always leak for us and my DD has chunky thighs so its not as if they legs are too big. I think they just aren't a good fit for her. Sometimes a diaper just doesn't fit a LO right.

I wouldn't throw in the towel on CDing. I know the laundry and paying per load has got to be a PITA but you're saving a lot of money, especially seeing that you're expecting #2.

I would maybe do a diaper trial so you can see what else you might like and what will fit your LO well. There are also newborn rentals out there, or you can go the PF route for the newborn stage with #2.

  • I think if I were in your shoes I might think about selling the pockets stash and using the money to buy a nice stash of prefolds and some covers.

Fuzzibunz leaked on my kids, too. I don't have trouble with Rumparooz, though.

  • I had the same problem which is what took me so long to convert to cloth!  I finally found Softbums and LOVE LOVE LOVE them!  They are all I use.  I highly reccomend trying them!  You can adjust the leg holes to any size you need on an elastic system and it's a one size diaper 5lbs to 35lbs so you won't have to keep buying different sizes.  If they work out for you, sell the FB you have that aren't working for you and buy more Softbums ;)
