I'm taking the 24 hour urine test for pre-e right now and my BP has been on the rise since the second trimester started (23 weeks, 3 days). My sodium intake was very low. We grow our own vegetables (preserve and can them) and bake our own bread (which uses about 1/8 tsp of salt for the entire loaf), and I've been a vegetarian for 19 years, type 1 diabetic for 20. We hardly ever eat processed food, our diet is pretty healthy. My doctor told me my diet was fine and stress can cause HBP. I think dietary guidelines say that you are suppose to get no more than 2,000 mg of sodium per day. But that would be MAX. It's really easy to eat too much sodium, they sneak it into everything! Hope your BP is okay and this helped!

I developed Toxemia during my 7th month with #1. My sodium intake prior was moderate and I stopped adding salt as much as possible, started label reading at the store to prevent purchasing items with MSG. Didn't help with the Toxemia but prevented it from getting worse. Ultimately it was bed rest with my feet above my heart and LOTS of fluids! I delivered the day after my due date!

When I was on bed rest with DD, they also had me on a low sodium diet; staying below 240mg of sodium per serving of whatever food I was eating. But we try to stay away from a lot of sodium any way. I am a much healthier eater this time around, and my bp problems have held off for the most part; just on bed rest for pre term labor this time!
When I was on hospitalized bedrest for pre-e and following the delivery when my BP was still high, they did not put me on a low sodium diet. This pregnancy I was advised to eat a normal diet, not low sodium. That said, I don't add salt to anything anyway, and I buy certain foods "low sodium" just to cut a little here and there, but I probably eat a moderate amount just in processed foods. At 33 wks my BP is just starting to creep up, but nothing at all alarming like last time, so hopefully just typical 3rd tri increase.
Re: Ladies that had pre-e or have HBP...do you?
