when do you keep your kids out of school

if they have a cold?

do you just go by how they feel? do you keep them out when they have green snot?  and what makes it a cold to you versus just daycare crud?

Re: when do you keep your kids out of school

  • I pretty much go on how ds is feeling.   If he is bouncing off the walls, he can go to school.  If he is moping around on the couch and has dark circles under his eyes, he stays home.

  • Your school should give you some guidelines, our rules say throwing up, diarrhea or fever over 100.5 in the past 24 hours.  (They make exceptions if the symptoms have a known non-contagious cause-- i.e. a food allergy, reaction to shots etc.).

He's actually home sick today because he had a fever of 101 at school yesterday.  If it's just snot and/or a cough (which is what it was yesterday morning) he can go.  If I kept him home every time he had a snotty nose I would never go to work and I would so be fired.

Ditto. A runny nose at daycare is the way of life. There are times when every kid in the room  has a runny nose, but they are all still active and don't have a fever. DS has a double ear infection, but is at daycare. He is on meds, doesn't have a fever, congetion is gone, and he is bouncing off the walls. He is perfectly fine to go. Oh, and we have to be fever-free for 24 hrs before you can return.

  • And if they have colored mucus I usually keep them home.

  • both my kids' schools have fever as a guideline. i then also take behavior in to account. my boys have such bad allergies, they always have runny noses. M's has been alternating yellow/clear but no fever, eating well, very active so he is at school.

  • Since I don't have unlimited sick days I use the fever/vomit guideline.  I do tell my daycare provider to call me if they seem unable to participate in the usual activities and I'll come pick them up.  That's never happened though.  They can mope around all morning at home, but once they see their friends they're happy as can be.
  • If he has a fever over 100.4.  He's got a constant runny nose, so that's not a reason to keep him out.

Daycare will also send him home if he throws up 3 times.  He does have a tendancy to cough up mucus.  To me, that's not a big deal but DC will consider that as "throwing up."

I've only kept him out twice so far and it was for a higher fever.  I would have sent him back the second day, but my mom had arranged to come in so we really just decided to keep him home again.

  • Amelia tells me when she doesn't feel well now.  I can tell when she's just not herself, she's clingy and cranky.  She has some allergy issues too and will have a somewhat drippy nose for weeks and be 100% ok and germ free.  I definitely watch for fever and won't send her with one.
  • Most daycare crud are colds or other viruses.

Extreme congestion (especially if it isn't clearing up) or bad coughs get a trip to the doctor to check ears, check lungs and get cleared for school. Vomit or diarrhea: stay home 24 hours after last episode. Fever: stays home until 24 hours after fever breaks.

It can be inconvenient sometimes, but I really don't like them to be there when they're sick.

They do go with mild runny noses.
