If you own a home with catwalk/balcony, etc....

How do you keep your kids from climbing over the railings? Has it been a problem for you, or do your kids just ignore the temptation to attempt to hang from the chandelier. Stick out tongue

I know, obvious answer, "You watch them"  or "You don't let them play in that area" .. duh.   But we all know how houdini-esque kids can be.  It only takes a second.

DH and I are considering buying a house with a 15-foot high catwalk, and even though DD isn't mobile yet, it's quickly approaching. The thought of her potentially climbing over that railing makes me shudder.

TIA for any insight/advice!

Re: If you own a home with catwalk/balcony, etc....

  • I have a 3.5 year old and a 2.0 year old.  We have always lived in a home with a 2 storey room and open hallway (with railings, of course).  Perhaps it is not novel for them, but they have simply never been tempted to climb up and do anything.

Now, throwing things off from above, that is high entertainment.  But not that dangerous (for the thrower at least).

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • thx for your response! I'm usually a pretty chillaxed mom, but when I saw that 15 ft high railing with a tile floor underneath?! gah!

It doesn't help that I'm afraid of heights myself. Smile

This.  Except we just moved to the house in September.  We don't put anything near the railing so there's nothing for them to think about climbing up on, but it's never occurred to the girls to climb over.  DS might think about it, but he's still small enough that he can't and I can't imagine him actually doing it.  Ours overlooks our entryway with hardwood floors.  The girls think it's hysterical to throw their toys down (usually through the bars rather than over the rail since they can't quite reach), but nothing more than that.

  • Our rails are about 4 feet high, they love to throw stuff over them and both are climbers but can't climb over them. They do try to walk on the outside up the stairs but we nailed that the first couple of times and they know it is a HUGE nono.
