2 vessel umbilical cord...

Does anyone have any experience with this? I am 36 weeks and they just found that I may have this. I have to go back next week for a follow up U/S. They didn't seem too concerned since everything else has looked perfect the whole time. But I can't help but worry. Any info would be helpful!

Re: 2 vessel umbilical cord...

  • I was diagnosed with a 2 vessel cord at my 22 week ultrasound.  They sent me to a perinatologist for further workup of this(among other things), they looked super close at her heart and kidneys, and said that *sometimes* it can be a sign of kidney or heart problems, but that if everything was there and formed correctly, there was little to be worried about.  Since LO looks great, they will just keep an eye on her size.  She's at the 37th percentile right now.  Thats the only thing it really affects other than kidney/heart (at least thats what my dr said).  I heard through the grapevine that they'll induce because the 2 vessel cord can't keep up if you go over your due date, and my OB looked at me like I was from mars, said he hadn't heard that.  So your best bet is to refer ANY questions and run all "advice" through your OB just to get stories straight!  But, since you are at 36 weeks and all seems fine, then I'm sure it is.  FYI - Back in the day before high tech ultrasounds, upon birth a 2 vessel cord was often looked at as being "neat", lol!  Of course now they know more about it, but just go by what the OB and specialists say!

  • Hello,

I am currently 19 weeks and I just found out on Monday that I have a two vessel cord. My Dr said just about everything that she had mentioned above. Although I am going for a second opinion b/c the specialist I am seeing is a bit of an alarmist and scared the crap out of me. Now I am just stressing out and I know that is not healthy for the baby. Please keep me posted on your progress and I will do that same. My next appt is next week on Wed.

  • DD had a 2-vessel cord, diagnosed at our 20-week growth scan. They sent me to a pediatric cardiologist to do an extra scan of her heart, and all wa swell. They also double-checked her size a few times to ensure her grwoth was keeping up. However, I'm not sure if we would have had so many checks if we weren't having twins. In any case, DD was fine and just slightly smaller than her brother at birth.

  • Hi- I will be your happy story to help ease your mind. I had a 2 vessel cord with DD. I was so nervous- read all about it, which freaked me out even more. I went to get a fetal echo done as well as both could be markers for something else. Everything checked out normal- as did her measurements during the anatomy scan. she was born perfectly heathly and normal. who needs that extra vessel anyway.

Also- the only thing they did was just monitor her growth- and all was fine throughout the pregnancy.

  • Hi!

I am 28 weeks and my baby girl was diagnosed with a 2 vessel cord at 17weeks. I have been going to a Perinatologist since then. I've had an Amnio to rule out possible defects and a fetal echo. All good so far.
She is also measuring right on track.

I go to the Peri once a month for a high level US. They always check the cord, her growth, kidneys, heart, stomach. So far so good.

The only new thing I have is increased Amnio fuluid but dont thnk it has anything to do with the 2 vessel cord.

    GOod LUck!

  • Thanks everybody! This does help ease my mind. Everything so far has been normal, all of her measurements are great and there has never been any concerns. Of course when the Dr. told me I freaked out and started Googling...my biggest mistake! I am just trying to stay positive and am getting a list of questions for my next appointment on Friday. I'll keep you all posted!

    Thanks again!
