Baby Showers

Registry Advice?

I am starting my registry, and have been looking online to start getting ideas. Most of the things I find online that I like aren't available in stores, and can only be ordered off of the website. Is it okay to only register online or should I also go to the stores and find different things that I like there? I have been looking at Target and Babies-R-Us. What is everyone doing? Suggestions, please! :)

Re: Registry Advice?

  • Register for items that can be found in-store as well. Some people are not Internet-savvy and others just prefer instant gratification of shopping brick and mortar.
  • I guess it depends upon the people you are inviting but my cousin's shower was two weekends ago and a lot of the stuff she registered for was online only since they live in a remote area and drove back here for the shower and as a result it seemed like she just got a lot more clothes than usual and not much other stuff vs other showers I've attended but that might just be the people invited.  I ended up giving one of maybe two non clothing/blanket gifts by going in with my sister to get her a baby monitor that could be picked up in store since I hated the idea of getting a smaller gift because of shipping charges. Maybe do some of both, pick out some of the basics in a physical store but then also have an online registry with some of the speciality items?

  • Noticed the same problem- there aren't great selections for baby registries. I recently went to a friend's shower, and everything online was backordered (PBK). She ended up getting a lot of stuff she didn't ask for and not the stuff she really wanted. This also makes it difficult for last-minuters. No one wants to put a pic of the item in a card, they want to bring a gift. You'll get more things you actually want if you find a store to register in.
  • I think I'm pretty internet savvy and I usually look at and print out a registry before I go shopping for a shower. That being said, I HATE paying for shipping, so I rarely actually order anything online off a BRU registry.

  • Some people will not purchase things on-line (my DH being one of them).  I rarely do and certainly not for a shower gift.  If the mom-to-be only registered on-line I would find something I think she needed at the store and get that (although normally I get something off the registry).  If you do register on-line I would also register at a store near where most people live (Babies R Us, Target, Walmart, etc).

Yes. You probably don't need to do this exclusively, but you should select a decent number available in-store. Generally older people tend to not like online, but I know my younger friends prefer online registries and not dealing with the hassle of driving out to a place they don't usually go. It cuts both ways.

  • I would put a combination of both on your registry. I am also registered at both Target and Babies R US and I really tried to make sure most things especially the big stuff could be found at the store as well as online. I have a lot of older relatives coming to the shower and they are not all that internet saavy. That way you will guarantee you getting what you like instead of picking something else out or something.

  • As I put together my BRU registry I realized that the majority of the items I wanted were online only. I ended up scratching that registry and set one up on Amazon. There are a lot more options and I was able to register for what I really wanted. Most of our family is internet savy and alot of my family will have to purchase online anyway. I know not everyone will be ok with buying online, so I listed in the note section on each item where they could purchase at a physical store location. It took a bit of time, but I am really not concerned with it.

Almost all of the items count towards the super saver shipping which is free shipping when you spend $25, which for a baby shower is pretty easy to do, IMO. If they do not want to spend that much they can find the item at a physical store.

I did create a registry at Buy Buy Baby as there is one that is local and they carried most of the items on the amazon registry. I want people to have options, but I hope they will consider the Amazon registry as the majority of items are cheaper.
