NBR: do you think this is rude?

?or maybe in poor taste is a better way to put it.  I'm taking a friend of mine out to dinner tonight to celebrate her birthday. I suggested the place.  Well I just looked on restaurant.com and they have a certificate.  So do you think it would be strange for me to use it to pay for part of the dinner? I don't know why I keep thinking it would be somewhat rude?like I'm using a coupon or something to pay for her birthday dinner.  I also don't want her to think I suggested the place because I had the GC.

FWIW, she is a friend but also a mentor to me.  She hired me right out of college and has always been someone I could turn to for any sort of advice:  work, personal, etc.

Ugh, am I just overthinking this?!

  • I don't think so.  If you are worried about it, just order a special dessert or pick up a little something special to give her, or maybe give her some pretty flowers.  If she is that close to you she probably won't think anything of it.

  • unless you can pay without her seeing, i would say it is a tad tacky. no rude per se.

  • I wouldn't be offended at all. If you feel funny about it, you could always just tell her that you found it after you made the reservation and comment about how lucky that was.

I'm sure you can just stick it in discreetly when the check comes, anyway.

  • I see your point, and I'm not sure what I'd do in the same situation (and I love me some GC/coupons).  If it was a close childhood friend (or something like that), I wouldn't hesitate for a moment.  However, something about the [somewhat] professional/mentorship nature of this relationship tells me that it might not go over without notice in this instance.

Why don't you just save the GC and then you can take ME out to dinner, next weekend?  Sooo...where are we going? Wink

  • I wouldn't be hesitant to do this with any of my friends. In fact, a joke would probably be made about it. You know your relationship best though. Is she the type that equates coupons with being cheap? And FWIW, I view the certificates on restaurant.com as just that - gift certificates not really coupons per se. I've received and enjoyed them as gifts.
  • I agree with PP that it depends on the personal relationship you have with her.  If it is more of a professional realationship, I wouldn't use the coupon.  If it is more friendly and you can joke about it, etc. then I would.

Precisely.  And there is a reason I am worried about it so I'll just avoid any awkwardness altogether by not using it.

So TTT, you're on!! How do you feel about sushi?

Not gonna use it tonight.  Instead, I will take TTT on a cheap-ass date.  You are invited too but I doubt my GC will cover it all so you'll have to pay for yourself.  Ha!
