Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Almond butter for a 9 month old?

We had DD's 9 month well check Friday and they said she needs to be fattened up (she was 16.4lbs and 29 in.).  The pedi recommended we mix cheese with her veggies, cook with olive oil, give her greek yogurt, as well as almond butter on toast.  She asked if there was any food allergies in the family - no there is not, but isn't that a huge no-no?  I wasn't intending on giving her any forms of nuts until at least 18 months.

She is FF fed and has 5 (4 - 5 oz) bottles a day along with 3 meals and two snacks.  She's always hungry, but she's also ridiculously active.  She never sits idle unless she's in her highchair.

Not that I'm discounting my pedi, she's the one with the degrees, but I just can't bring myself to follow her instruction.

Would you all follow this advice or maybe get a second opinion?

  • It's ultimately up to you what you want to do, but all the allergy rules are changing.  A lot of pedis now say holding off won't make a difference when it comes to allergenic foods.  I know there are babies on here that get peanut butter.  It basically comes down to what you're comfortable with.

  • My pedi ok'd almond butter as well.  In addition to the new research on allergens tree nuts such as almonds are lower on the allergy list than peanuts which are a legume.  I have not introduced almond butter yet but that is just because we don't have any in the house.  My pedi said as long as he does fine with almond butter I am fine to introduce peanut butter in small amounts.

  • Hmm.  Thanks, ladies.  I guess I never even considered giving her nuts or shellfish until 18+ months because I wanted her to communicate to me should there be something wrong.  But it sounds like I need to do a little more research.

  • I would probably hold off just a bit longer.  DD isn't even 17lbs yet and almost 1 year.  We try to give her lots of cheese, olive oil, avocado, full fat yogurt & cottage cheese.

Has it helped her gain weight?  Are you concerned with her weight?

I'm honestly not totally buying the bulk-her-up mentality.  As I said, she's really active and eats a ton, so I'm thinking she's just a little baby.

No, she hasn't gained more than 2 lbs over the past 3 months but I'm not really concerned.  She's extremely active and eats grown-up sized portions so I feel like she's fine.  I'm not going to fatten her up just because.  Pedi suggested giving her a ton of carbs but I'm not comfortable with that.  She likes her fruits, veggies, and proteins so why would I push pasta, kwim?

Yes, I do, because that's how I feel too.  Thanks for your input!  I know she's smaller, but I wasn't really concerned until this discussion.  And that she would go to the extent of advising a potentially allergenic food at this young age.

Anywho, I love your newborn pic with your LO - it's very sweet and all - but I think the attitude pic needs to be a regular. Stick out tongue  I can't help but laugh at that photo everytime I see it.

  • You look like a thin person yourself...probably just genetics. If your dd is healthy and happy, I wouldn't worry. I'm not a doctor either but fwiw my dd was the same way. My pedi never freaked out though-just looked at my husband and I and figured she was just going to be a thinner kid. We tried to give her full fat versions of everything but in the end she stayed on the same curve. I wouldn't worry too much and I also wouldn't give almond butter. Just my opinion.P.s. Your dd is too cute!

lol, thanks!  I feel strange having a normal siggy pic.  Mine are usually E making some nutball face or crying.  I'm doing some cake smash photos this week so hopefully that will produce more attitude!
