Yikes! SA #s : (

I just got my DH numbers from his SA. NOT good at all.

The doctor said he wanted to see above 20 million and he had 2 million! But he said his motility and stuff was okay. He wants him to retest and stop taking melatonin- there is some controversary over it effecting sperm count. My husband is not taking this well at all. I have me HSG tomorrow. So we will see what to do from there. The doctor said that the numbers were okay for IUI. Anybody else have numbers like this?

TTC#1 since 7/07 with MFI and Endo/PCOS IUI #1 and #2 with 50mg of clomid= BFN IUI#3 with 100mg of clomid and Bravelle= BFN Lap surgery 11-18-09= found Stage IV Endo :( Three months of Depot Lupron Shots and adding 2000mg Metformin IVF w/ ICSI May 2010 = BFP, M/C at 6 weeks Break to lose weight, down 60 pounds and gearing up for IVF #2 in August 2011

I'm sorry to hear of your results.  I hope that stopping the melatonin will make a big difference in a few months.  As for the #s for IUI, I think that most doctors want to see over 10 million post wash.  I think 2mil is low, but I guess it depends on your ins coverage or financial situation and if you are comfortable with it.

If it was me and I was out of pocket or had limited coverage, I probably wouldn't do it with 2mil.

    Good luck.

  • I agree with pp. Maybe the melatonin will make a difference though.

    Good luck!

  • I am sorry - hearing those results are hard.  Maybe you can have your DH go on vitiamins - extra Vitamin C and make sure he is wearing loose underwear - boxers and tell him to keep his boys cool. I hope the second SA shows better results - best of luck to you.

  • My DH had 5.3 million per mL (10.6 million total on that one) 3.9 million per mL (25+ mil. total on that one).

His morphology is good and motility is just slightly low.

Honestly they told us we pretty much need IVF.

I am assuming your DH's #s are 2 million per mL. You didn't give us the volume but let's say it's 2 mL. So if your DH's motility is 50% good (which is the minimum normal #), you are left with 2 million total motile sperm. I also heard that you can expect half of that # to get lost in the wash.

So that leaves you with 1 million sperm. I personally wouldn't bother with IUI with those #s and they told us we pretty much need IVF with our #s. I have heard different #s of what REs want post-wash for IUI, from 5-10+ million total.

Definitely get some repeat SAs and good luck.

  • Like pp's, I would DEF have some repeat SAs to be sure... Our numbers are less than a million and IUI wasn't even on the table. (MH was already on vitamins, etc.) Our RE only offered up IVF w/ ICSI as an option for us, which we are now in the process of.

My husband took this news really hard as well, but we try really hard to be open about stuff (like REALLY hard, because it's very much his nature to shut down when he's upset) and are now focused on moving forward.

    Best of luck to you!

  • We found out last week our #s were not good either.  5.3 mil with 46% motil.  I think my husband is still in shock and thinks it will just take us longer than average to conceive (we have already been trying 11 mos).

I think he has agreed to try vitamins, and then maybe we will do a second SA with a RE.  Plus, I haven't had any testing yet since OB wanted SA first since I have regular periods and am getting positives on digital OPKs.

So, no real advice, but I feel like I am going through the same thing :(  Actually, you seem to be in a better place b/c you are focused on moving forward, and I don't think we are there yet.  Good luck.

  • Definitely give it a little time and try the vitamins and do another SA!

Our numbers were slightly low (we had 17/million per ml) but our motility and morph were absolutely terrible -- 1.8% and 1.5%. We're still waiting for a chance to do our second one.

Our doctor told us with those numbers we'd be going straight to IVF, but he wanted another SA or two done first just to confirm.  We wasted so much time not getting an SA done at first, because we were operating on the assumption it was all me, since I'd gotten pregnant quickly and m/c, then stopped ovulating.

  • I did not know about the link between melatonin and low count.  My DH takes that nightly, and he even told his urologist about it.  I guess he should stop taking it if it might be affecting his count.  Ugh.  Why did I not know about this months ago?
