Similac Advance to Sensitive and poop issues...

I switched from Similac Advance to Sensitive (the orange container milk version- not the soy) a couple of weeks ago since DD was pooping almost every diaper change with the Advance and was spitting up alot (she does not have reflux).  The Similac Advance solved the spit up issue right away but now she only poops about once a day (although not at all yet today) and when she does it is kind of like she grunts and screams, then it is like explosive diarrhea brown but not pebbles or anything.  So my question is did anyone else notice this?  She is almost 6 weeks old.

FYI: Orginally she was on Enfamil Newborn but she didn't like that as much.

  • DD did the same, we switched to senstive from adavance because she was having BMs like 15x/day. Now she goes about once a day and occasionally we give her molasses/water for constipation. When we first switched she did go like 36 hrs without a BM.

  • Our Pediatrician recommended  2 oz of water a day to help with constipation. My little guy now drinks about 2.5 oz of water a day and has 1 bm a day without any pain or straining.  What I usually do is offer him water before his formula bottle. He will usually drink about .25 oz at most feedings.

  • LO started on Enfamil Newborn as well, had a lot of spit up issues & what I thought was excessive gas, so I switched to Similac Sensitive.  Sensitive didn't change his gassiness but helped w/ the spit up issue & I had free sample cans of Advance, so we switched one more time and he's done fine.  But he did have a BIG INCREASE in BMs w/ the Advance, so maybe the opposite is true switching the other way?

  • We had the same issue when we switched to the Similac Sensitive. Although DD's stools would not be hard, as if she was constipated, but she would just go a couple of days without going. Our doc suggested we do 1 tbsp of DARK kyro syrup in her bottles twice a day. He said this would soften her stools. It tooks a couple of days to kick in (and she loved the sweetness of those bottles) and it worked. I usually did it once in the morning and in her nighttime bottle (as her bedtime treat).

DS's pedi just told me to do this today.  I hope it works for him as well because I hate to see him screaming while he poops.

  • Totally normal for her age. All babies turn red and grunt while pooping. Once a day is totally normal.
