Help! My MIL fed concentrate formula without adding water!

I have a call in to the doctor but we went out of town last yesterday and left LO with my MIL. I gave her the concentrate formula and told her it was equal parts water. When we picked him up today she said there was none left and I sent lots so I asked her how much water she used. She said she forgot and thought it was RTF! He probably had 5 bottles this way!! I'm freaking out babe said he pooped this morning and he has been acting fine but I'm so worried. Has his happened to anyone else? I could kill he right now.

  •  I'm sure he'll be fine...  my main concern would be dehydration.

If you're really freaking out and you can't get a hold of your doctor, you could take him to the ER (it's probably not very busy because of the Super Bowl), or call poison control at 1-800-222-1222. No, formula isn't poison, but they are very helpful in situations like this.

  • I hope your LO is okay, probably just a few extra calories and maybe a bit of constapation comming his way. We use concentrate and I make sure I pre make the bottles before sending it over because I am afraid that might happen. GL
  • If he is acting ok, having plenty of wet diapers and pooped, I would think he is fine.  Maybe offer a little bit of plain water and wait for a call back from your pedi.
  • Dr said take to the ER to get electrolytes checked. On our way. The worst part is I texted my dad about it and said some not nice things about my MIL and accidentally sent it to my MIL! I apologized right away and said I'm just upset but I haven't heard back from her. :(
  • oh no! keep us posted. I agree with PP call poison control, some vitamins in large doses could hurt the baby. Not trying to freak you out, just better to be safe than sorry!

I am so sorry that this happened and hope LO is ok!!! In the meantime, cut your MIL some slack. I am sure she feels absolutely rotten over this. What a sticky situation!

  • I had a friend who was super sleep deprived and fed her newborn concentrate without diluting it for a week. The baby was fine -- just lots of diarrhea.

:(  I hope LO is ok, it sounds like from other people's posts the electrolyte check is probably a precaution more than anything.  Does your MIL usually listen when you give instructions regarding LO?  If not, at least she'll have no choice but to follow every last detail the next time she watches LO.  Plus, you have one heck of an awkward in-law story!
