Yesterday morning, Tyler was really fussy all morning but I couldn't chalk it up to anything specific. I thought he was hungry and gave him breakfast, which consisted of cereal and some watermelon (which he loves and eats with great gusto).
He always manages to get the collar of his shirt all wet the way he eats watermelon and yesterday he started, quite literally, digging at his neck. I thought it was irritated because of the wetness so I changed his shirt.
When I changed him, he had a rash all over his neck, back and chest. It wasn't his "typical" allergic reaction (he usually breaks out in big hives when he is allergic to a food), but I thought it could be from the watermelon anyway. I applied some hydrocortisone ointment to it and went on about the day.
When he went to bed last night, the rash was still there, and it was also on his legs and he was scratching them wherever he could reach. This had to have been at least 8-9 hrs after eating the watermelon. DH was the one who got him ready for bed so he gave him some Benadryl, still thinking allergy and to relieve the itching.
So this morning, he still has these bumps all over his chest and back, some on his arms, and still on his legs. It's obviously very itchy because he is tearing up his skin from the scratches. The rash isn't red at all and the bumps are very small, but they are raised and warm to the touch. I haven't given him any medicine today yet. He isn't as fussy as he was yesterday and his appetite is normal.
Any ideas what this could be? Does it warrant a visit to urgent care, or would you wait to see the pedi tomorrow? I'm not sure what to think, an allergic reaction doesn't typically last this long, does it?
Re: Rash - help please (sort of long)
My best friend's son has a similar rash- though just on his chest and neck- whenever he gets strep throat.
Other than that- if it were an allergic reaction 1. the benedryl would have helped a lot and 2. it would be gone by now. If he isn't running fever I would probably get him into the peds first thing tomorrow morning, but if he gets fussy or uncomfy I would take him to urgent care.
With all the strep that's going around....my first thought when you said a rash on his back and chest was a strep rash. But I don't know first hand what it looks like.

Very interesting, I never thought of strep throat. I guess I will call the pedi in the morning if the rash is still hanging around. He doesn't seem to have a fever, but kids are strange.
Thanks for the info!
(Oh, and no Kathy, he has not had a bath yet. I usually give him a bath every other day so he's due tonight. Will be interesting to see what happens.)

This is exactly what I was thinking. When I had strep in October I had the rash as well. Hope he's feeling better soon! I would call the pedi in the morning.
I am late, hopefully you get this.
We took Sawyer to the Dr on Saturday for a small rash on the back of his neck, similar to what you described, but only on his neck. He was also really fussy, but I assumed it was his molars.
It was strep.
So, I guess I am just reiterating what everyone else says.. Good luck!
Dangit. I'm so tired of illness. Ours and everyone else's! This winter needs to be OVER, now!!!! grrrrrrrrr
Ok, I have that out of my system now. Will be calling pedi in AM. Thanks everyone
