Nurseries and Baby Gear

baby clothing size question

I have heard that diffrent brands of children's clothing have diffrent sizes of clothes but label them as the same sizes.  So a 0-3mth sleeper from one store might be a completly diffrent size then from another store.  Does anyone know what brands run large or smaller then the average size for that age group?  I want to organize the babies dresser.

 Hope that makes sense.  Thanks.

Re: baby clothing size question

  • I think it also depends on your LO's body type.  My nephew is pretty long, so he grows out of pants way faster than tops no matter what the brand is.  For DD, Baby Gap, Gymboree, and Ralph Lauren fit her the longest, so I think they run on the larger size.  Old Navy runs smaller.  When I organized her dresser, I just put all the same size clothes together by label, and when it was time for DD to wear them, I could separate them into ones that were larger and smaller.

  • This is what I've found so far:

Ralph Lauren - generally runs small

Gap - True to size or a little generous. However, I have found some items run small so it's a crapshoot.

Old Navy - Same as Gap

Carters - True to size, some shrinkage

Little Me - A little smaller and shrinks

    Gerber - Small

  • It really does depend on your kid.  DS is 19 pounds at 4 months and is still in a lot of 3-6 month clothing even though the measurements on the size charts would say otherwise.  It just has to do with his build.

I find Gymboree and Dwell Studio from Target to be the most generous of all the brands.  Ralph Lauren runs super small, and Baby Gap seems to be right on target.

  • Ralph Lauren runs small, as does Kissy Kissy (this is a brand of sleepers we had a ton of).  I think Carter's seems pretty accurate- my son is 17 lb and is still fitting in 6 month size pajamas, but about to go into size 9 month.  Gap was definitely pretty close to actual size requirements - in fact my son still fits in his Gap sweaters that are 3-6 month, but the one piece Gap stuff is way too short.  A lot of the higher end brand pants and such are really long which is great because we have gotten the most use out of these for longest time- Egg, Splendid, True Religion, Baby Mish, Tea Collection, City Threads.  Gerber onesies are way too tiny- Carter's are much more accurate to size and much better quality.  Gymboree and Janie and Jack get more wearing time too- they are closer to size.
