1 hour Glucose test today...

Any advice or info on what they do? I am really nervous about getting GD. How common is it? And if I get it, how hard is it to deal with?

Re: 1 hour Glucose test today...

  • I think you mostly have to follow a special diet and try to avoid gaining too much weight. That is what I have heard anyway. The actual test is not that bad at all. I was all worried and the orange drink tastes like orange pop, its more boring than anything to wait out the hour.

  • The only advice is I wouldn't assume I passed until I heard from them. I thought I passed, then got a call a week later saying I failed with a 158. I passed the 3 hour, though.

  • Good luck!

The test itself is easy.  You have to drink the nasty drink and they stick you 1 hour later.

I failed my 1 hour test just barely (everyone I know who's also pregnant now failed theirs too).  I easily passed the 3 hour.  I'm guessing since it's mid-afternoon that you've already eaten today but I'd try to go as fasting as possible.  I ate breakfast before mine (egg beaters and an english muffin) and failed by 2 pts.  I fasted for the 3 hour (per their instructions) and easily passed.

  • You go in drink the drink (like a small bottle of soda) in under 5 min. Wait an hour, have your blood drawn. Done. I had mine yesterday and got my results today. It is easy, I always feel a little dizzy and a little sick to my tummy during. Get something to eat right after the blood draw, it will help your body regulate easier.
  • I thought the orange drink was really good. You ahve 5 minutes to drink it (I would have chugged mine if it wasn't so damn cold!), you wait an hour and then they take your blood. I had mine done last week and haven't heard anything back, so I'm guessing it's all good. I'll find out for sure at my dr. visit mext week. Good luck:)
  • The other posters are correct.  You get a nasty (I describe as Orange kool-aid with an extra cup of sugar) drink and they do a blood draw.  If you are high, they have you come back and do the 3 hour.  I had GD my first pregnancy and it wasn't too terrible.  You just watch what you eat (avoid carbs) and exercise (I did a lot of walking).  You have to test your blood a lot throughout the day (about 7 times). Keeping it in check kept the baby's weight down and even had me lose weight during my pregnancy (I had never ate so healthy or exercised as much).

Just because you get it once doesn't mean you get it for each pregnancy (I didn't even have to go back for the 3 hour on kid #2).  I think failing the 1 hr test is fairly common, but having GD is not as common.  Good luck!
