Yet another desperate cry for help! Now that we have found a place to live, they want copies of our orders. We go to look at our orders, and we have a 'report no later than' date of April 15. Yet he is done w/ work on Feb 24th, and he and every one else in his class thinks they are supposed to leave then and head towards our next base. So: I'm not confident enough in this to put notice in at our current place, sign a lease at our next place, start packing, etc etc. What have you done if you have been in a similar situtation?? Are these not our "real" orders?
Re: PCS orders?
The "report no later than" date is just that - don't arrive after April 15. It is the way all orders are written. A lot of times folks take leave in between permanent duty stations - the large space between your check-out date from your current duty station and your "arrive no later than" date to your next duty station accommodates that. Again, everybody's orders are written like that. Those are in fact your real orders.
ETA: If it helps you feel any better, at least you have an exact date. My husband's orders always say "report no later than January" or "report no later than April." And only have a month. Which is translated to mean - report no later than the very last day of that month. If you're super concerned though, have your husband ask his chief or CO for some help on how to go about the PCS process.
Also, are you packing yourselves out? It sounded like that from your post. Have you considered having the military do it or are you really wanting to do a DIY move? Either way, military one source can help you out a tone with info on how to go about planning a PCS. There's just too much to say about PCSing to try and put it in a reply on the bump.
He has to put in leave if he doesn't want to report in until April 15. He gets permissive TDY and travel days for the PCS, but after those are up, his leave would then start.
For example, we just PCS'ed, DH graduated flight school on Oct. 27th and had a report date of Dec. 13th. So he took his 10 days of permissive TDY which ended on Nov. 6th, he then took leave until the 13th that was approved at the post he cleared from. If he hadn't taken leave he would have reported in on the 6th.
He doesn't have to take to leave, but once TDY and travel days are up, if he doesn't report in he can be declared AWOL.
Personally, we always got out of where we were leaving couple of days after he cleared and spent the majority of the time at the new post.
Thanks, good info! We are so confused b/c no one relayed the idea of a "check-out" date to him. He assumed that's what he was supposed to do b/c the rest of the class is leaving then. So he gets his out-processing done by the end of his class in a few weeks, then we have about 10 days to get to our next base (I thought it was 5). So 5-10 days...and I will check out military one source. We are doing a DITY move. We did that 6 months ago (just from Louisiana to Texas) and made over $3000 extra. It's more my husbands idea...and we have family helping us out or I would put my foot down. Thanks!
Okay this kinda confirms what my husband thought was gonna happen. Good to hear it from ppl who have been through it more than we have. Except, he thinks we only have 5 permissive days to get from TX to VA! So I'm hoping it's 10, I'll have him check on that. The ppl at our apartments looked at us like we were crazy when we asked to move out in 3 wks, then showed them orders for April. That's what made me think it was so crazy! But obviously not. He wants to get there asap, so we will prolly leave a day or two after he's done. We r at Goodfellow and he is SO bored! I actually found a hobby and ONE friend! (-: Hoping Langley is a little more exciting for both of us!
Don't confuse travel days and permissive TDY- they are two separate things. You will be given an authorized amount of travel days (4 or 5, can't remember..I think Texas to VA is 4?). Your SO needs to find out if his current command (at the class) will be putting him on permissive TDY, or if he has to check in with his new command in VA and they will approve his permissive TDY.
Oh my goodness! Thanks for all the clarification! I haven't even mapped our trip yet...i'll go do that now (-:
