I had a belly casting kit on my registry, but decided to look up to see if it was any cheaper to do it yourself and it sure was! Yesterday, I went to Hobby Lobby to pick up the equivalent to three 4"x180" rolls of plaster cloth for $10. I had a tub of Vaseline already at home so that night, DH helped me do my belly cast (I was 35w6d)! It was messy and took about 10 minutes, but it turned out great!! It's still a work in progress since I have a few strips leftover to reinforce the back, gesso, sand, paint (boobs for owl eyes and the belly for the owl body) and seal.
I cut the rolls into different lengths..also slathered myself in Vaseline (the one with cocoa butter smells great)
DH as my lovely assistant and a bowl of warm water for the plaster cloth
Voila! I had a pic of me with the cast on, but decided not to post it in case of any creep-os. I might have put TOO much Vaseline on my body because I felt it slipping off before it was dry so at the end, I was trying to hold it and use a hair dryer. But overall, very pleased!
me modeling with it the next day!
I think for my next kiddo, I will cast only my belly and make a bowl out of it. I've read a lady who put a coaster where her belly button was so it would help it stand up after it dried--so smart and an alternative to remember your pregnancy if doing the boobs or more of your body seems kind of strange.
looks great! so you're going to paint it and hang/display it... where?
Not sure...maybe the nursery? By then, I'm hoping it looks more like an owl and less boobs & belly...lol. I just hope I don't scar him later on! hahaha.
