Pre-School and Daycare

4 year old DD and UPK

Well now that I have narrowed down my search after visiting over 12 schools, I am on the fence with 5 half-days (2.5 hours) or 5 full days?  I'm leaning toward full day because it would be much easier on my DH who is the SAHD especially with taking care of DS who will be one when DD starts PK.  Right now she's in day care for only two days per week 3 hours a day.  Is 5-6 hours 5 days per week really too long and too much for some?  I've heard some kids love it.  What are your experiences?  I like three schools, two are half day and the other full day.  The full day school is most convienent and closest.

Re: 4 year old DD and UPK

  • My 3.5 y.o. is in full-time preschool/dc and he likes it. We are picking him up temporarily after lunch b/c he had pneumonia and now we are trying to minimize the exposure to sick kids (parents tend to bring sick kids to full-time schools more than 2.5 h schools as they have to work and have no choice). In the spring we are planning to resume the full-time schedule.

  • OUr 3.5 yo started in a program that was 4 full days, 1 half day per week (I picked him up early on Friday)  It was WAY too much for him, and we ended up pulling him out of that program after 2 miserable months and put him in a much lighter program.  To be fair, he hadn't really been in daycare before then, but he was just constantly exhausted, stressed, acting out, etc. in the full day program, and now with a part-day program, he's happy and loving it.

    FWIW....
