Cloth Diapering

Question about pockets (newbie)

So I'm only learning about CD at this point, and I think I like the idea of the pockets, however I have a question, I know you remove the insert but isn't the micro fleece wet, or soiled? or won't it smell? so to me it's more like a AIO and throw in the diaper pail after just one use....am I wrong here? I mean I've never even seen one, but it seems to me that the pocket would also need to be changed after just one use...so what's the diff between the pocket and an AIO?? help pleeeeeze!

Re: Question about pockets (newbie)

  • Yes, you remove the insert but the entire pocket diaper has to be washed after each use.  An AIO has the absorbant layer sewn in, but pockets don't have any absorbant layer and that is why you use the insert of your choice.

Other than taking out/stuffing inserts the other big difference is drying time.  Pockets dry much faster than AIOs.

Once the diaper has been used, you toss the whole thing into the laundry and use a fresh one.

AIO'S are a one-piece diaper...no removable parts.  Pocket's need to be stuffed with an insert of some sort.

  • Since you have to wash the entire diaper (shell and insert) every time, virtually they are the same as an all-in-one when it comes to usage.

The big differences for me are 1. You can choose how many/what kind of inserts you want. For example, during the day I use one insert, if I'm going out of the house, I will put a doubler in for extra absorbency. Overnight I can put in a hemp insert as well for extra extra overnight absorbency -- and 2. Drying time. Since I use a drying rack indoors to dry my diapers, a pocket may take half a day to completely dry, while an AIO can take up to 2 days to completely dry.

  • You do have to wash the pocket every time - It isn't considered an AI2 where you just replace the insert and reuse the cover.

As PP mentioned, the benefits of a pocket over an AIO is that you can choose the insert - as much or little absorbancy as needed.  I for instance, don't use any of the original inserts that came with my diapers. I can also double or triple (or more!) the amount of inserts I put in.  At night I use 3 inserts, during the day, 1 or 2.  They also dry much faster and clean a little easier!

this. use is the same, composition and cleaning is different. you're thinking of an sll in two (AI2) where you havean insert nd a waterproof, wipeable shell. that's more similar to the prefold/cover system.

  • I just wanted to add to what the PP's have said.  Without having actually used my diapers yet, I like the idea of the AI2 system over the pocket system because I can reuse covers and therefore spend less money overall. I don't think I'll use many/any AIO's because of the drying time factor, I like to hang dry and don't want my diapers to take 2 days to dry!

However, CT daycare guidelines state that DCP's can't reuse covers for sanitary reasons, so I will need to invest in a pocket system for daycare or have enough AI2 sets that they won't need to reuse a cover.  This negates the cost savings though, so I'll likely go the pocket route for DC.
