Potty Training

I need help!!

My son is 3 1/2 yrs old, and we've been potty training since he turned 3yrs old. He still has pee accidents and has yet to even poop in the potty. I'm at my wits end here. He understands to pee in the potty, but will not tell me he has to go, I always have to ask him. And if I ask him to late, he'll run in the bathroom after he's peed his pants and tell me he has to go pee pee in the potty. I'm taking it one step at a time and we use pull ups at nap time, bed time and if we have to go anywhere. I just don't get why he doesn't go in pee in the potty when he has to go. Is this a rebellion thing? I have a 4 month old, or is he just not ready? But he seems so ready and understands it, and I think 3 1/2 is more than old enough to be ready. Please, please help!!

Re: I need help!!

  • I wish I could help. DD was showing interest at home right after DS was born. We started her in pullups b/c I didn't want to deal with accidents & a newborn. She was potty trained at daycare within the 1st week, except for naps. At first, she would try to tell us & sometimes made it to the potty & sometimes didn't. Then she stopped any effort at home all together. But still completely trained at school. It was crazy. We had been taking the "don't force it" approach. She would only pee at home when she wanted her potty treat!

Then, I bought her Tinkerbell panties, put them on the mantle & told her when she started keeping her pull up dry, she could wear them. I talked to daycare & they said she could wear panties to school since she'd been staying dry for months. The week of Christmas, she went to DC Mon-Wed. Every morning, waking up & saying "I wanna wear my TB panties". Well, she got up Thursday morning & said the same thing. I said "you're staying home today & you don't pee in the potty at home" She said she would so I let her wear them. I kept asking her if she needed to pee & she wouldn't go or try. So I carried her to the potty every now & then when I knew she should ahve to go. She threw a fit sometimes but after 2 days of that & 2 accidents on Christmas day, she's been completely trained. We do pull ups at nap & diaper at night. Sometimes those are dry.

Have you tried treats or a potty timer? We tried all that. Could you bribe him with some cool underwear?

  • We have tried rewards for using the potty. He understands that pee goes in the potty, but he just refuses to go to the potty to pee. It's like he's rather pee in his pants.

We've been using underwear for a couple months now, just pull-ups at night and if we go out. I can't help but think he's just being lazy, if that makes sense.
