I have been looking everywhere for a certain Graco DuoGlider stoller in Lowery print. Target stores have them on clearance right now for $69 but online it's still regular price. Boo! So I found one store in the entire state of AL and it was on display in the store. So I talked to the manager to see if I could purchase it anyways, since I was getting it on clearance and it looked like it had never even been tested, I didn't care. But, sadly, they are not allowed to sell any store displays for liability reasons. I asked her what they did with the displays and was shocked to hear what they have to do with them. They throw them away!! That just hurt to hear that. She said she always feels so horrible when they have change out the displays and throw the old ones away. They also do this with carseats, of course, any and all furniture, and all baby gear. WOW! That is a lot of money being thrown away. Again, I understand that if anything were to happen that they would be liable, but it still seems so sad to me to think about everyone out there who can't afford to purchase these things and to know that they are being thrown out. I was tempted to beg her to tell me when they would be throwing it away, wait until it was in the actual trash, which I *believe* is considered public once it's on the curb or in the dumpster, and go fish it out. Gross, maybe but seriously, a $150 stroller for free would be worth it.
Anyways, I found it interesting since I had never given it much thought as to what they do with displays. What are y'all's thoughts on this?
Re: Target floor models
My best friend is a Target manager. The items they get for display don't come in boxes. They can't sell them because there is no box for them, there is no instructions for them, or anything like that. There would be no warranty, etc. . .
I'm pretty sure it's the same for all their home appliances too. You can't buy any of the toasters or blenders you see on display.
And it could very well be that it's because they don't come guaranteed safe and are just made to be floor models - I don't know the answer to that. But I do know that they don't come shipped to the store in an actual for-retail box with all the parts and accessiories needed and then put on display.
I have worked in retail for like ten years and it would be my guess that they probably destroy it before tossing it. alot of stores do this and destroy it so people cant dumpster dive for it. also their dumpster is most like a large compactor that u couldnt get to.
i think it is sad that they throw it away. they should donate them to a womens shelter or something.
LOL! I would seriously consider dumpster diving for it if I was right behind them when they put it in. Haha. It would make sense that they would destroy them before putting them in or that they would have a compactor, I just wish there was a way they could give away the things that didn't pose such a danger. Like not a car seat or crib or anything like that, but it just seems like such a waste. However, I do understand, especially if they aren't up to code.
I used to work at Target and they don't throw anything in a dumpster it all goes into a huge trash compactor on the back that customers can't get to, sorry.
I am sure someone that works there would have gotten to it way before you did.. My BIL worked at Toys R Us years ago and they had to do the same thing. I can't tell you how much he hauled home and re-sold on Craigslist. That totally sucks though, I hate it when you can't find something you love!
Wow interesting, makes total sense!
