1st Trimester

Subway, Firehouse, Quiznos

Are these safe as long as toasted/steamed?  Are any of you avoiding deli meat completely?

  • my personal choice is to avoid it for the first trimester, but then I think anything that is heated is ok.  You could maybe ask them to steam it twice??  If you are really concerned, call your dr's office and ask.  They can tell you.

  • I ate lunchmeat throughout my first pregnancy, and I am sure I will again.  And no, I didn't heat all my meat.  But to each her own! :)

  • I quickly abandoned avoiding lunch meat in my 1st pregnancy when I was having bad m/s, we were at a restaurant, and the only appealing thing on the menu was a club sandwich.  I took a bite feeling guilty but as soon as it hit my belly I felt better.  I chowed that sandwich down and felt the best I had in weeks.  After that I allowed my self deli meat in moderation.  I have eaten it with each pregnancy.  I have never toasted or heated it, but I know for a lot of people that makes them feel more comfortable.

  • My Doc said that I could do Subway toasted. However, she also said that I could eat Jimmy John's turkey (because they have a high quality of meat, and they go through the supply quickly), so I think she is pretty lenient on the subject.

She said just to avoid the super processed stuff that you would buy at the grocery store (Oscar Meyer, Carling Budding, etc...)

If I go to Subway, I usually do the chicken breast which is hot, and I do Jimmy John's turkey in moderation.

A club sandwhich sounds pretty amaz right now too :)

  • Call me a bad mom, but I haven't stopped eating it. Given, I don't really eat lunchmeat that much anyway. Yesterday I had a turkey sandwich from Panera, and I consider them to be higher quality. However, it doesn't make a huge difference to me, as I would eat the ass end out of a horse right now. HA! j/k. I am hungry though.

  • I'm just avoiding it.  I don't really like it heated up.

For what it's worth, I thought I read somewhere that the risk for listeria was higher in 3rd tri b/c your immune system is more supressed.   I don't remember where I saw that though.

Anyway, I know the chances of getting it are very small, though I do wonder if that is in part due to all the precautions a lot of people take....or if it is just not an issue.  In any case, I feel better avoiding it whether that's all in my head or not.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.
