School-Aged Children

What will your kids do over the summer?

If you work, what do your kids do over the summer? We are looking at a few day camps in the area, but most of them don't start early enough for us to drop DS off and still make it to work on time. What are your plans?

  • Do you have a Boys and Girls Club of America nearby?  My friend signs her kids up for camps there during the summer and they start early enough for her husband and herself to get to work.

  • DS goes to camp. some have early drop off and late pick up times for extra fee. Maybe bring it up to the camp and see if they are willing to do that. I bet a lot of other parents could use it too.
  • A few options that we will look into are our schools summer camp program - runs the same hours as the school year before and after care program.  We will also look into day camps run by the Y or our Temple.  Once the kids gets a bit older, we are going to look into over night camp which could be anywhere from 1 week to a month depending on age.  I am sure we will end up doing a variety of things over the course of the summer which is going to be a real pain.  Honestly, a part of me would really love to just hire a nanny for the kids for the summer so they can sleep in, go to the beach, etc but I work from home 3x a week so not really sure that would go over to well.  Oh, and our daycare has a school age summer program that I am also going to look at and compare the price with the other programs.  That goes for grades k-5.

  • My 8 YO daughter will go to daycare, the same one she's been going to since she was very little.  They have a school age program where they are separated from the other kids most of the time.

We LOVE it.  First of all, we're in a really small town so she's there with many of her friends.  She can be dropped off as early as 6:30 am and has to be picked up by 6 pm.  But best of all, they plan activities for almost everyday!  Swimming, museums, parks, movies, etc.  Plus they will take whoever signs up for swimming lessons for two weeks, something that I couldn't ever do working full time!  And it's cheap!  We LOVE SUMMER!

  • Our YMCA has camps AND a summer care program (which is much less expensive than camp and they get to do a ton of activities).  I'll be doing the summer care program - it's like $21/day here which is unbelievably good for a 7 am to 6 pm program.  (They charge the same rate as the after-school program - this could be because I live in a generally lower-income area.  We could be weirdly lucking out there since we don't get any financial aid and have to pay the full price OOP.)
