Help. My babies lost their shiit last night

My kids had their final feeds at 10:30, after this i normally swaddle them and put them down and feed on demand overnight. They refused to be swaddled, to sleep abd cried or were fussy all night long. They were fed and dry (i even nursed to soothe last night). My mom is here in town for 2 days to help and yesterday she held them through every nap, even though they slept my only thought is they were overstimulated or overtired?! I really don't know why they were so crazy. I can't have another night like this, advice???

  • I think you will just have those nights every once and a while.  It sucks.  Have you read Happiest Baby on the Block?  I watched the DVD, which is nice because you don't have time to sit down and read anymore!

It gives techniques for calming fussy babies.  Some of them helped us, some didn't, but it's worth a shot to check it out.  Also, did you try gas drops?  Maybe they had gas??

BTW, you look fantastic!  I have a yellow lab too. Smile

  • Sometimes they just do inexplicably annoying things, unfortunately. If it becomes a pattern then you might find some clues. Otherwise hopefully it was just a fluke.

Yeah smilee sent me her DVD! The swing is the only reason Reese slept at all last night :(
I'll try mylicon today if they don't settle in. So frustrating!
How is your dog handling the twins? Gracie is half interested and half terrified.
ps thanks for the kind words!

Boh is doing extremely well with them.  I'll be honest...we didn't prepare him at all.  Usually he's totally uninterested but sometimes he'll lay near them and just stare at them.  He's very gentle with them and almost instinctively knows he has to be gentle around them.

    Here's a pic!

  • Sorry about the rough night. Like pp said, some nights are just like that. It sucks. In our case being held for naps never seemed to affect their nighttime sleep, and even being overstimulated might make them harder to put down, but I doubt if it would have kept them up all night.

I spent many a night with both girls in the recliner watching MASH reruns.

Yep.  We had nights like that in the early days, too.   Thanksgiving was particularly awful and I think it was because of overstimulation. After that, I was afraid to let anyone around the babies for a few weeks just out of fear of another night like that.  I probably overreacted but I was traumatized.  New Year's Eve (what is it with my kids and freaking out on holidays?) was also pretty awful and they had been home with us all day so it just goes to show that sometimes its just a fluke).

Just know that these nights will pass and that the babies can smell fear on you.  The more freaked out I got, the worse they were.

  • It's also possible it's a growth spurt.  I know most babies sleep more during growth spurts but my DDs were the opposite :)  They were up all night and nursed non-stop.  It doesn't last long if that's what it is.  GL!
  • This is about the time that gas really hit for my girls. They slept for most of the time up until about 3 1/2 to 4 weeks old. Then they suddenly woke up one day and gas hit them hard. They had a very hard time with it. Mylicon did help, but I found I had to use it as preventive, meaning give it to them before the feeding or right after. Not waiting until the gas actually started happening, at that point the horse is already out of the barn and the Mylicon didn't help.

And Happiest Baby on The Block was a life saver for me at this age.

  • At that age I let them sleep in swings or bouncers.  Whatever works!
