daycare wants faster bottle nipple size

My daycare provider mentioned that my four month old should be using faster-flow nipples on her bottles.  I've always just given her the newborn (size 1) flow nipples because I EBF, and was under the impression that faster nipples would make her fuss at the breast if she got used to the fast flow of a bottle.

Am I wrong?  Does anyone have any experience with this?  I asked why (actually I said, what, is it taking her too long to eat?) and she said that it seems like DD is "working too hard" and that it's not good for her to have to work that hard.

Any opinions on this?  TIA!

Re: daycare wants faster bottle nipple size

  • DS used stage 1 nipples until a year old when we stopped giving him bottles. So I would say don't change unless she is collapsing the nipple.

  • her experience is based on formula fed babies, you can politely refuse and mention you want to continue BF, and that would disrupt it. It may be she wants to get the feeding over faster so she may argue, but don't let your DC providers laziness interfere with your nursing rlationship... if she persists find a new DC oh and print this out and give it to her:

Oh and the 'working to hard comment' is stupid... BF babies do work harder but it is shown to develop their speech faster! They use many more muscles to nurse than to even bottle feed from a slow flow bottle, thats why bottle preference is scary for BF moms and most take all the precautions they can so stay strong!!

  • DS is is 7 months and still uses stage 1. I didn't want him to become a lazy nurser. I would just tell them, you will start using a faster flowing nipple when/if you feel comfortable doing so.

  • I never changed nipple size with DD. I also used a Breast Flow bottle and it didn't just leak mik she had to work for it. I never considered going up in nipple size. I'd just stick with what you're doing/comfortable with.
  • I think it really depends on the baby.  I talked to DS's teacher about it around 6 months, and she actually wanted to stick with slow-flow because she thought the faster flow would "choke" him.  My pedi thought it would help with his feeding difficulties (which were actually due to reflux) and asked me to try level 2 nipples.  I bought a couple of medium-flow nipples to try, but DS never liked them.  We used level 1 until he was a year old.  You can always give it a try and see how your LO does.

  • Thanks, ladies.  I have worked so hard to establish BFing.  The absolute last thing I want to do is jeopordize it in anyway.  I appreciate the input.

  • We *just* switched to a medium flow.  And, it was out of our own fear that DC would request a faster flow.  She was on slow flow until she turned 5 months.  I have a pretty fast letdown/flow already.  We struggeld with overactive letdown whenshe was little.  Now iIt takes her 5min to eat from me, but was taking her up to 40min to eat 4oz from a bottle.  I knew DC wouldn't be happy about that.  So, we tried medium flow, and she seemed to take to it ok.  Now, she is eating at about the same speed she BFs at.  I am ok with this.
