My SIL's baby is Eva. They pronounce it like Ava. I've seen the name Eva on here a lot, and I'm wondering if most people pronounce it "A-va" or "Eve-a". Just curious...
Hi. My name is Eva and I sponsored this message on behalf of all the Eva's of America who are tired of being called Ava when they are neither Hispanic, nor do they spell their name beginning with an A.
i think most people will say ee-vuh but i say ay-vuh. it's the only spelling of "ay-vuh" i like as ava to me looks like it should be pronounced "ahh-vuh" or something.

Woohoo! Someone who knows how to pronounce my nickname right!
Depending on language/culture of origin, Eva can be pronounced EE-vah or AY-vah. Both are equally legit, it just depends how the vowels are pronounced in a given situation. Likewise, Ava is most commonly pronounced AY-vah here, but can also be pronounced AH-vah, in certain languages(I know there are others, but the one that comes to mind right now is Latin, where A is always pronounced "ah" like in father, and E is always pronounced as a long A). In the case of OP's niece, I'm guessing the parents had a particular reason(possibly ethnic background of one or both parents, or a country/culture that had special meaning or memories for them) for choosing the less-common(in America) pronunciation.

Re: How do you pronounce Eva?
That annoys me because it makes no sense phonetically.
FWIW, I say Eve-ah.
Jeebus. It's EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVAAAA!
A-VAH IS AVA. E-VAH IS EVA!!

Ee-vah.
Although, I know a few people in Europe who pronounce it, Eh-vah.
This, kinda. I have a friend of Czech heritage who pronounces it Eh-vah. So I usually ask which it is.

I know an Eh-va and an Eve-ah, both spelt Eva.

This. I think of Eva Peron. I also think it sounds much prettier than "eevuh".
I think my mother hit the nail on the head and solved this completely when she named me Evah. Pronounced Ee-vah.
