Scary-ish news today

So I had an ultrasound today and I thought everything was looking good until she said "Im going to have you see the doctor and then we are going to bring you back in to get a better picture" When the doctor sat me down and said they saw something I asked her just three questions... "Will my baby make it to full term, will she die at a young age or will she be sick her whole life" when she answered no to all of those I relaxed a little.  She told me they saw a "bright spot" on the babys heart which later I was told was "echogenic cardiac foci" I guess they use that as one of the early signs of down syndrome (along with enlarged kidneys and the small or missing nasal bone). At first she said "chromosome abnormality" which made me think something horrible but I was somewhat relieved to here her say "the only risk would be downs syndrome" Anyways... after explaining everything they brought me back into the ultrasound room and measure the nasal bone and looked at her kidneys. They both looked great! She said with my age and those two things progressing normally that we most likely do not need to worry about the little "bright spot" on her heart. They drew my blood for a quad screen just to make sure. Either way I will love this baby with all my heart. I know downs syndrome would make things a little more difficult but they are such sweet children and can have an amazing, normal life when raised right. I know she will be perfect either way but it was still a little added stress to my day.

On a more fun note... My siggy is the pictures from today

  • Wow, I'm sorry they scared you! Why wouldn't they check the kidneys and nasal bone first, so you didn't have to get so worried? Hopefully baby is happy & healthy, but Downs is definately not the end of the world. My DH worked for several years with special needs kids in the school district, and they really are the most open and loving people in the world.

  • Oh jeez. I'm sorry. That had to be so scary how they initially handled it. Great questions though BTW. I'm glad the rest of the scan went well!

  • That must have been frightening to go through, but you have a great attitude about it and it seems that no matter what at this point everything will be okay for you!

  • It sounds like you are handling things extremely well. This child will be lucky to have a momma like you be it normal or otherwise. Its good that the professionals sound optimistic. I truly hope everything works out for your family. Sorry about the stressful day, sounds very stressful indeed.

  • Wow that had to be so terrifying, especially how they first broke it to you. You have an awesome attitude, and I'm sure everything will be fine. Even if your little one does turn out to have Downs, she'll of course be a much-loved blessing. My husband has had the pleasure of working with many DS kids, as well as others with special needs and they are truly amazing, loving, joyful, wonderful blessings. I will be praying your little girl is healthy and that everything comes back negative on your screen.

I thought the same thing but because she saw the heart first (almost by accident) she had to let the doctor know to see if she should proceed and check the other areas. She wanted the doctor to talk to me first because she knows I would have noticed her doing the extra measurements and really focusing on those areas (I know they are associated with downs) Its still a little nerve racking but im glad the other two areas looked good. :o)

  • I think the way the doctor approached it would have made me especially nervous.  I hope your LO is fine, but you're right - Down's children can live great lives and are some of the happiest kids around.  Big Smile  You and your DD are in my T&P!

  • I had the same thing happen at my anatomy scan with DD.  Turned out to be nothing and the spot disappeared a few weeks later when we went to the specialist.  Sounds very similar to my story.  Good Luck!
