So I had an ultrasound today and I thought everything was looking good until she said "Im going to have you see the doctor and then we are going to bring you back in to get a better picture" When the doctor sat me down and said they saw something I asked her just three questions... "Will my baby make it to full term, will she die at a young age or will she be sick her whole life" when she answered no to all of those I relaxed a little. She told me they saw a "bright spot" on the babys heart which later I was told was "echogenic cardiac foci" I guess they use that as one of the early signs of down syndrome (along with enlarged kidneys and the small or missing nasal bone). At first she said "chromosome abnormality" which made me think something horrible but I was somewhat relieved to here her say "the only risk would be downs syndrome" Anyways... after explaining everything they brought me back into the ultrasound room and measure the nasal bone and looked at her kidneys. They both looked great! She said with my age and those two things progressing normally that we most likely do not need to worry about the little "bright spot" on her heart. They drew my blood for a quad screen just to make sure. Either way I will love this baby with all my heart. I know downs syndrome would make things a little more difficult but they are such sweet children and can have an amazing, normal life when raised right. I know she will be perfect either way but it was still a little added stress to my day.
On a more fun note... My siggy is the pictures from today
Re: Scary-ish news today
I hope it all works out. I will be thinking nothing but good thoughts for you!
I thought the same thing but because she saw the heart first (almost by accident) she had to let the doctor know to see if she should proceed and check the other areas. She wanted the doctor to talk to me first because she knows I would have noticed her doing the extra measurements and really focusing on those areas (I know they are associated with downs) Its still a little nerve racking but im glad the other two areas looked good.
