Decorating question

So I got this bedding (in white - yes I know I'm crazy) from my parents for Christmas.  We're planning on painting the walls in our room a light gray, and will have some darker gray bedding, a gray couch and some apple green accent colors (pillows, a vanity, maybe a lamp base or shade - you get the idea).

My question is - we're now leaning towards white furniture.  Initially we were going to do a mix of black and white, but now I'm leaning towards white, which I think is problematic w/ white bedding.  However, there will be a lot of color on the bed even though the duvet is white - pillows, quilt are going to be a dark gray as well as some green pillows and maybe a green throw.

So WDYT about the white furniture?

Re: Decorating question

  • I love white furniture. But I'm picky about my whites matching so I don't think I'd go with white bedding on a white bed.
    .
  • I would still go with a dark espresso furniture but I am not a huge fan of white furniture.  I think even some funky mirrored furniture would look nice.

  • I need to see a pic of the furniture, or something similar. I'm having a hard time picturing it because I generally think of white furniture being for a kids room

  • This is the style of the bed - but it's going to be closer to the PB Farmhouse canopy bed:

  • I like the second pic, that is nice. However, I dont think white on white will work, even with the accents. I would either do that style bed with an expresso color, or exchange the bedding.

Our bed is almost identical to this one, but much higher. All of our furniture is white and we have even done white bedding before. I accessorized with light sage green walls, pillows, etc. I thought it looked and felt very fresh.

  • Mel, fresh is definitely what I'm going for.

My husband is building me a small vanity (basically it looks like a desk - a very simple one) that I am going to accessorize with bins and I think we are going to paint that green actually.

Also our couch is at the foot of our bed and it's going to be dark gray (darker than the walls).

    Agree.

Me too. And for the record, I have white bedding and black furniture and love the look. I use green as an accent in my bedroom.

Too funny because I have a small desk in my bedroom that I use as a vanity that I painted green Big Smile

  • Mominator, you clearly have AWESOME taste.

Maybe we will go w/ black which was our initial plan - or a mixture of white and black or white and espresso w/ the green vanity.

It can be a mixture because we are reusing two dressers we have by priming/painting and adding new hardware.  They can easily be white or black - I think a different stain would be harder (they're a light stain now - I loathe them).

  • What about a black bed and white for the dresser/nightstands?  Our bedroom is black/white and kelly green.  Our bedding is white with black edging and our furniture is black.  We have three walls painted gray and then the wall the head of the bed is against is green (as are a couple of the pillows on the bed).  Even with the dark furniture, it still feels really fresh.

Are you painting the white furniture yourself?  I've found store-bought "white" furniture tends to be yellowish/cream and it would drive me crazy if my bedding and bed didn't "match."

  • As you describe it, I think it would look nice!

Have you ever checked out Centsational Girl's blog out?  She is so talented and her master has a white bed and other furniture with white bedding and pops of color.

I think you should go for it!

  • We have almost the same bedding as you with dark espresso furniture and grey accents, black and white framed art. Let me know if you want a picture to see how it would looke
  • thanks, yodajo!  I love that blog and had never seen it before!

Andrewsgal - I'd love to see a pic.

Mamarazzi - we could definitely do a mix, so I'm keeping that in mind.

  • If you were to ask me, I would go for both color. Black and White is a good combination. Anyway, talking about decorating, children present a hard challenge when it comes to decorating. Parents have been asked several times to re-decorate kids' rooms. Often times, once every few years the issue comes up again. Re-decoration doesn't have to mean emptying your bank account. Instead, you can redecorate kids' bedrooms quickly and inexpensively.

Good thing she didnt ask you. Huh?

  • LOL! WTF? Eclaires didn't ask about decorating a room for her kids.

    Starry, thanks for the laugh!

  • I am going to chime in with something you didn't ask as well. We have that same bedding in white with gray walls in our bedroom. Our furniture is espresso colored (although we had it before and didn't buy it to go with the room). I LOVE white furniture, and I am sure you will know if it will match since you have good taste ;).

Now for the part that you didn't ask....I LOVE this furniture from Pier 1. It is hard to see from the picture, but it's kind of a distressed mirrored finish. I have been wanting this vanity for years. You can also get dressers, etc in this finish. If you are going to mix and match, this would be really pretty to throw a piece or 2 in:

    image

ETA: That bedding is actually an awesome choice because you can machine wash the duvet and/or bleach it...so I don't think it's crazy at all. That is why we bought it, actually. (I think ours is actually a different brand, but it looks exactly the same).

  • I have a white bed and white bedding and I love it. I'd go with a white bed and mix up the furniture a bit, dark wood nightstands or dressers maybe.
  • It sounds like you would have control over the shade of white because it would be a DIY, right?  I think the white on white could be very pretty, and if you already have the bedding, you could pick a complementary white that would actually highlight the crispness of the white bedding (picking a cooler white heading toward the cooler grays in the accent colors - not matchy-matchy making it the same color - chose a different shade with intention of adding a sense of depth to the ensemble).

It could be very striking if done correctly.   I'd go for it (nice thing is, you could always repaint if you hate it... and while it would be a PITA, it's easier to go from light to dark than the reverse).    :)

Thinking this bed might actually be metal... but it gives you the sense of the subtle contrast you could create... very pretty, and could head either more modern or more of a "fresh" look you're wanting... love the idea, honestly.

  • thanks, everyone!

I really like your idea, hooray - I look at a blog that has a lot of white furniture/decor (Life in the Fun Lane) and I think she does something similar.  I think we might do the nightstands and bookshelf in an espresso stain and have everything else be a white (dressers and bed).  The room is pretty huge.

Also, I see some crazy bumped this post up - hilarious.  I love it.
