growth scan vs. real weights (those who delivered)

I would just love to hear from those of you who have delivered if you can share how accurate and/or what was the difference of your babies weight from your last growth scan to their actual weight when they were born?

Re: growth scan vs. real weights (those who delivered)

  • One of my DDs actual wt. was way off from the growth scan estimate. She was labeled IUGR and the techs could never get a good read on her due to her positioning. They said approx. 4 lbs. and a few oz. and at birth, she was just shy of 6 lbs (so not IUGR after all).

Other DD's actual wt. was a little bit closer to what they could measure on u/s. They estimated her to be 6 lbs. 8 oz and she was an even 6 lbs.

So in my case, the growths scans were off but thankfully it turned out in our favor and I was able to bring home healthy babies.

  • At my 36 week scan, both babies were measuring exactly 6lbs. They were born 8 days later weighing 5lb 4oz (DS) and 6lb 2oz (DD). HTH!

  • I had a growth scan two nights before I delivered. They estimated Baby A to be 4lbs 5oz (was 4lbs 3oz) and estimated Baby B to be 4lbs 10oz (was 4lbs 7oz). So they were pretty close.

  • I had one the morning before I delivered (I actually got home and my water broke) and I will say that they were both so far down the couldn't get a very accurate measurement on their heads.  But they were off by a pound on each of them.  Patrick was estimated at 6 lbs and was 5 and Connor was estimated at 5.5 and was 4.6.

  • My last growth scan was at 37w. I delivered at 37w6d. Nate was estimated @ 7.13 and Ryan was estimated at 7.8 lbs. They ended up being 6.12 and 6.1 at birth.

  • I had a full growth ultrasound the day before I delivered.  It said that one baby was weighing 6lbs8oz and she ended up weighing 5lbs14.5ounces.  It said the other baby weighed 4lbs8ounces and he weighed 4lbs10ounces.  They weren't able to get a good measurement of her stomach because of the position she was in and so they said her weight could be a bit off.  It was.
  • My last scan was they day before my c/s. They thought iugr too. They measured 3-15 and 5-2. Ended up being 4-9 and 4-13. Not so much iugr. My doctor told me it might have been a false alarm while stitching me up. Ha!

  • My last growth scan was at 35w 4d and Baby A (boy) was estimated at 5lb 9 oz and Baby B (girl) was estimated at 5lbs 11 oz.  They were born at 37w 1d and Baby A weighed 6lbs 5oz and Baby B weighed 4lbs 15.5 oz.  They were way, WAY off on Baby B.  When someone came back in the OR to give my Dr. the weights for paperwork and I heard 4lbs I was shocked.  The weird thing is that at every single growth scan, she measured ahead of her brother.  I think they are just built really differently - he's a meaty kid and she's just really petite.

  • My last growth scan was at 37w. The boys were both est. at 5lbs11oz.

I delivered six days later and they weighed 6lbs10oz and 6lbs7oz.

ETA: At my 35w growth scan they were estimated at 5lbs12oz and 5lbs7oz so the 37w estimate had me a little concerned (even though I know they can be off ;)). Looking back, the 35w one was probably more accurate.

  • I didn't have a growth scan too close to my delivery, but they always had baby C quite a bit larger and A and B were close together but B was a little larger than A.

    At birth they were A: 4lb4oz B: 4lb6oz and C: 5lb4oz at 33w5d

  • They were a bit off for us.

With the twins, they predicted E to be under 3lbs (I think, 2lbs 8oz and labelled her IUGR) and she was born 3lbs 1oz. L was said to be under 4lbs (I think, 3lbs 10oz) and he was born 4lbs 4oz. With A, they predicted her to be 2lbs 4oz and she was born 2lbs 10oz.

  • Both babies ended up being about a half pound smaller than estimated at my last growth scan.

  • DS was close - within about 3oz.  DD was off.  Because of the circumference of her head and length of her shin bone, they put her at 5lbs when born.  She ended up being 4lb2oz.  My OB was shocked.  They say it can vary up to as much as a pound.  My growth scan was a week before I delivered.

  • At 34 weeks they told me the girls were about 5.5 lbs each.

They were born at 36 weeks 3 days, 5 lbs 4 oz and 5 lbs 12 oz.

Now...they were sharing a placenta, and my Dr said later that she thinks they started to lose nutrition in the womb (particuarly A), which is one of the reasons that they often recommend delivering mo/di twins at 36 weeks.
