Cortizone Shot Question?

On Monday morning I was in a car wreck. Someone rear ended me coming off the highway as I was stopped at the light. I now have a herniated disk in my back and a fun case of whiplash. LO is luckily fine. I've been sitting here reading posts in between sleeping in a recliner all week and talking myself out of taking the strong pain killers they insisted were totally safe for LO. Today, I managed to get dressed and spent 2 hours at my dr going over my treatment options. She recommended getting a cortizone shot. She said it was completely safe for LO and it should provide me with immediate relief for the next 11 weeks or so and then once I get done with the pregnancy, if it hasn't resolved itself on its own we can look at PT. Anyone have this done? It sounds pretty painful.

Re: Cortizone Shot Question?

  • I would get the shot.

  • I've had them in my ankle and my back.  They didn't help at all, but that's just me - they also didn't really hurt to get, so it is definitely worth trying.  Some people swear by them for relief...

  • As far as getting one while you're pregnant, I have no idea. But I've had cortizone shots in the past when I played basketball due to a torn ACL and it was not that painful. If it's something you think you really need, than just get it.

  • I was supposed to get them in my heels due to issues I was having, but I was told no by the doc because of the pregnancy.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

  • I have had steroid lumbar empidural injections several times, although not while pregnant. I have had cortisone injections in both my wrists however while I was pregnant. I would definately do PT but do consider the steroid injection. They work well for some people.
  • I've had quite a few for my knee.  To me they are unpleasant but helps the pain go away for quite awhile.  I haven't had one while I was pg but they would have given me one if I felt it was needed.

  • Like several other PPs, I had a cortizone shot prior to pregnancy.  I had a ruptured disc - L5, S1 - and they wanted to exhaust all options before putting me under the knife since I was just a teen.  It did provide temporary relief and was not painful - just uncomfortable.  I actually have a picture of the needle inserting the medicine into my disc - pretty cool.  For me, it didn't do the trick because my condition was too far gone, but for my brother it gave him enough relief from a herniated disc to do PT and heal completely.

  • get the shot. I have been putting cortaid on my belly (approved by my doc) for a rash for the past week and its pretty much the same thing as the shot.

  • Just had Cortisone shots lastweek for Carpal Tunnel and I thought it would hurt but it didn't. I have a lot of relief and doctor says it is perfectly safe.
  • Most docs will recommend you only have a few cortisone shots done for a specific area over your lifetime, because it can weaken your joints and cause other issues. I would start with PT if you can bear it, and try a chiropractor too.

I had a doctor tell me I couldn't do a steroid shot for my lower back while I was pregnant -- but perhaps it depends on the severity of the pain. I still had other options to try at the time.
