So I failed my 3 hour GTT last Saturday. I got a glucometer and have been taking my sugars for the past 2 days. I have been eating normally without any changes in my diet. I had my appointment with the nurse at the practice today. I asked her "I understand I failed the 3 hour test, but EVERY number in the past 2 days has been lower then they should be, so could it be possible that I dont have GD and the large amount of glucose at one time is the reason for my numbers?". She got really upset at me asking this and said (in a nasty tone) " THIS test says you have it, so YOU HAVE IT. PERIOD."
I was kind of taken back by her attitude toward me asking a question.
She also began telling me that when you are pregnant that your body creates a hormone that puts more sugar into your system. Then goes on to say... when you test your numbers should be lower than a normal persons numbers (under 90 when fasting and under 120 two hours after meals). The more I thought about this..... If my body is producing more sugars because of the hormone that my body creates when being pregnant, shouldn't I have a HIGHER number than most "normal" people?!
Has anyone else with GD been given different numbers to stay under? I think this lady might be kind of crazy
I cant wait for my appointment with the new practice. This is just one more reason to not go back there!
Sorry this was so long....
Re: GD- if you fail the 3 hour you AUTOMATICALLY have it
Hi there. I think I'm a borderline case myself. My endocrinologist wants my numbers under 120 one hour after eating, not two. And she was unhappy when for a week or two my numbers were in the 110's (even though they were under 120). So my doctor is really strict. With some tweaking of my diet I managed to get all my numbers under 110 an hour after meals and she's happy with that. And really thats with a barely modified diet. If I had to do the 120 after TWO hours, I would easily pass eating no matter what I wanted, and yes I'm still considered as having GD.
The interesting thing I've found is that while my numbers might be fine with certain foods- other ones just make my numbers go up. For me the diet has been easy because I just figured out which ones raise them and just avoid them.
Also- I'm 39 weeks now, and I experienced an improvement in my sugars around week 36- which some people talk about. I can eat almost anything now with no high numbers.
I was frustrated too when I was first diagnosed. I'm not overweight, no family history of diabetes, no risk factors at all- and I barely failed each test. Even after testing my blood I thought my numbers were fine- again, if I had the two hour limit I could eat anything. But my doctor really drilled into me that its not about me, its about my baby and to suck it up and just eat better. And you know what- I've gained less than 20 pounds with my induction scheduled for Monday and really feel healthier eating this way. I've added more protein and green things to my diet and am just more careful about what I eat. Count yourself lucky if you don't need to go on insulin or don't need to modify your diet too much.
Anyway, best of luck during your pregnancy! GD is not the end of the world!
