how do you handle talking back?

ds is going to be three in two months and the talking back has begun..in full force!
it ticks me off beyond belief but im not sure exactly how to handle it.
do you ignore it...and hope it goes away?? do you put him in time out?
i dont want to have a mouthy kid..but i feel like the more i address it the worse its getting.

Re: how do you handle talking back?

  • I say to her "Sorry for arguing Mommy."

If she repeats and apologizes in a nice voice, I get down on her level and help her articulate what she thinks/wants and try to meet her halfway.  If she doesn't apologize or is pissy about it, I simply walk away.  I tend to grab the twins and a book and read to them because it's a script to me and I don't have to stew while figuring out what to do.,  Helps me not feed into her.

Lately I can give her "the look," and she'll apologize and add "What  I MEANT was,"

  • I just look at my daughter and say, "Excuse me?!" and she will usually correct herself.  Then I will remind her that talking to me like that is not nice.

LOL!  I do the same thing and now when I do something that annoys my toddler he says "Excuse me?"  to me!  Funny, but annoying :-)
