Making inserts/doublers

I think this has been posted before, but I can't find the link. I'm interested in making some doublers and inserts, but am not sure how to go about doing this. What fabric should I be looking for? Fleece? How much fabric would I need for 10 or so doublers?  Should I stuff them with anything?

Any info you could provide would be great!

Re: Making inserts/doublers

  • Fleece isn't absorbent so don't use it for inserts or doublers (unless they are fleece-topped, with an absorbent layer underneath).  You can use any ansorbent material.  Ladies around here swear by hemp.  I like bamboo, too.  Cotton isn't as absorbent.  You can also use microfiber.  The amount of fabric you need depends on the dimensions you want and the number of layers you plan to use.

Thanks! Fleece didn't sound right to me either when someone told me that.

As far as the number of layers-what is typical for a doubler without adding a tond of bulk? 2 or 3?

  • Most of the doublers I have seem to be two layers.  Inserts are more - three, four or even five.

  • You may have heard about using fleece as a reusable liner.

  • The Cloth Revolution diaper pattern has an awesome list of materials that you can use for inserts/soakers and how many layers to use. Even if you don't sew the pattern itself, it's worth the download (it's free!) just for that information.
