Infertility

Should I get a Lap? WWYD? Advice please?

We are unexplained. I've now had 2 perfect (on paper at least) b2b IUI cycles fail. One with Clomid, one with Injectibles. Here's my dilemma. I have one more IUI cycle covered by insurance then it's OOP for me, and I have no IVF coverage. I haven't had a lap, and my RE feels they aren't worth it because it's the same outcome/treatment (IVF) after failed IUIs (he suggests doing IVF after 3 failed IUIs) whether you had endo or not. If I want one though, I can get one. IUIs are obviously less expensive so I might want to try a few more before IVF. But if I do have endo (I don't have any major symptoms except IF), IUis are probably pointless and would be a waste of $ and time. But if I don't, IUIs could still work. I also feel like my RE moves patients onto IVF sooner because let's face it, they make more $ and the success rate is higher. So I'm trying to figure out if I should just get a lap and keep doing more IUIs or not and just move info IVF if IUI #3 doesn't work. I know it's ultimately my decision, but WWYD? TIA!

  • I could tell you what I am doing - I am not sure if it will help you or not - we have MFI and we have done 6 IUI's which were covered by insurance.  But we can only do a few more so we decided to have Dh get the varicolce sugery and I am going to have the Lap Surgery - we firgure we want to give ourselves the best option when we go for IVF because we can only afford to do one IVF because it is 100% OOP and both of our surgeries are covered by insurance.  All of my testing has come back normal including an HSG and Endo Biopsy - but you never know - there has been women on this board we were told everything looked good and then went in for a Lap and they found something.  I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

  • I thought if you had a lap and they discovered endo, depending on the severity they could remove alot of it and by doing that increase you chances of concieving on your own without treatment or by doing some IUIs.  I will have a lap if this month's IUI is not sucessful.  Plus if a lap will give me a diagnosis it will help me know what I am dealing with.
After 2 years TTC with mild endo and an elevated FSH. We were successful with our second IUI after Lap surgery. Our daughter born 12/2009. Currently trying for #2. IUI#1-miscarriage, IUI #2-BFN, IUI #3- BFP Pregnancy Ticker
  • I don't know if I'd have a lap unless my RE recommended one. I'm assuming you've had a HSG and your tubes are clear, etc.

It's a tough choice and I wish you luck and wisdom when you make your decision.

  • Hello, your situation is very similar to mine, I too had to recently make the decision on going forward with the lap.  I hope my story helps in your decision.  I went off the pill and 4 cycles later became pregnant.  I then miscarried at 8 weeks.  We continued to try for 23 cycles later including 6 IUI's with Femera.  We were completely confused to why we could not get pg again.  All tests came back normal with both of us.  I asked my RE if perhaps being on the pill for so many years could have suppressed endo.  I had no symptoms of endo except for the big one, infertility.  He told me it was unlikely but we proceeded with the lap anyway.  I wanted to know what we were dealing with before proceeding on to injectibles or IVF.  Sure enough, he found mild stage II endo.  He cleaned everything out and told us to try on our own for a few cycles.  He feels that this procedure increased my fertility enough for us to do this.  I am feeling a lot more positive about our situation than I have in two years and it feels so good to finally have answers.  I know all lap outcomes are different but I am very pleased with my decision and how it turned out.  Good luck to you!!!!!
  • there were a couple of posts about this yesterday. ?my view on this is that you have to go with your instincts. ?my RE believes that it's more important to move forward with treatment and not waste any time, but there are REs with the opposite view, that you have to test until you know what is going on. ?and many in between.

?if it helps to hear what others have done, my story is that we are also unexplained and we are currently about to start IVF #2. ?i have not had a lap. ?you are right that IVF would be the recommended treatment if they find endo, but there are also lots of other issues that could be bypassed with IVF if you are unexplained. ?for example, it could be that the sperm are not able to fertilize the egg for some reason. ?yes, it is much more expensive, but my choice was to move forward to IVF after 3 failed IUIs because i was really starting to lose hope after my 3rd IUI and wanted something with a better chance of success.

    i hope this helps.?

  • I don't know what to tell you except talk to your doctor more. ?I had a lap and they found endo even though I had no signs of it. ?So we are moving onto IVF and wasting time or money on an IUI. ?It sucks to have to pay OOP for IVF but if that is what is going to work for me I am all for it. ?I hope you find the answers you are looking for. ?Good luck.
