Wilton Cake Decorating class?

I am thinking about taking a cake decorating class at Jo-Anne Fabrics. It is pretty cheap and something that really interests me so I thought it would be fun. Has anybody here taken one? I am pretty good already being self-taught but I know you need to take the basics class first before they allow you to take the more advanced classes. I am especially interested in the fondant and gum paste one.

So did you like it? Have fun? Learn something? Was it jusr you and a bunch of stuffy blue-haired's or a younger crowd? thanks!!

  • I took a class about 30 years ago. I was 12. LOL

But the class I took was a good variety of young, old and in betweens. My first job was as a baker in a coffee shop, so it was worth it to me. I would do it.

  • I think it really depends on the teacher.  I took a class and didn't really learn much that I couldn't have learned from reading the book.  The only thing it really did for me was to give me two hours a week of time to practice out of the house with no distractions.  It was fun though.

Yeah, that is kind of what  I am looking for. I'm not trying to open my own bakery or anything but I do like making fun cakes for family celebrations. I want something for me that is fun and gets me out of the house (and away from my kids and dh lol.)

  • I just took the basic class and the fondant class a few months ago. I'm pretty sure that I was the second oldest person in my class! I took evening courses, I'm sure that makes a difference in the class makeup. It was a lot of fun and hopefully I'll take the gumpaste class in March. After the first class I moved to taking the classes at a different store because the first instructor was really bad - she knew what she was doing, but she was a super lousy teacher. The second teacher was awesome.

  • I did it and it was fun but I did not anticipate how much work it was- you have to bake a cake each week plus mix a ton of icing in different colors. You could bake the cakes all at once and freeze them though to make it easier. Overall it was fun. I bet you would like it.
  • I took all of the Wilton classes at JoAnn's.  I loved the instructor and learned a lot...cake decorating has become my new favorite hobby.  That said, I really felt at times like the classes were just a big advertisement for Wilton.  I felt like in order to really be able to do all of the things they were teaching, I needed to buy more than just the products that were included in the student kit, so be prepared to spend more than you are expecting.

Oy. The icing. I had forgotten about that!! You had to make huge batches of it every week! I should have bought stock in the shortening and sugar companies!
