NPR: Do you check your receipts for accuracy?

Do you check your receipts for accuracy after you leave a store? I have to admit, I used to kind of chuckle at my mom as she would do this every time we left Wegman's, but I am starting to see the light.

I was looking through some holiday receipts and noticed that I was double-charged for an item at Target (I know I only bought one, but the quantity was "2"). I just looked at another receipt (from a recent trip to a different Target) and I was double-charged for two separate items on that transaction. I'm thinking maybe their scanners are super sensitive?

I didn't have the first receipt on me when I was returning some items at customer service a while back, and they told me to just bring it in and they'll credit the extra item. I love Target, and I'm sure it isn't the only place this happens, but check your receipts for accuracy!

  • Yup. I am a coupon queen, so if they miss one or charge me wrong, I usually notice it before I leave the parking lot.

  • Yes, especially the "buy one get one free" deals. If I am buying a handful of things, I like to get a general idea in my head of how much it should be so that if it's off I can notice it right away.

Also, I have been paying more attention to the change I get back. A few weeks ago the lady at Dunkin Donuts gave me two $1 bills back, but one of them should have been a $5 bill.

  • I usually try to, and I've had the same problem of being double-charged several times at Target.  The first few times I just let it go because it was just a couple dollars on grocery items, but when it kept happening I finally remembered to bring my receipt in to get a refund.  The lady at the customer service counter told me their scanners are so sensitive that it happens on occasion.  It would be nice if they would fix it because I'm sure there are lots of people who are overcharged on smaller ticket items and never even notice.

this.. except I am more like a coupon princess... since I have only been doing it for a little over a month...

  • EVERY time I go to Target, I check my receipt because they undoubtedly make a mistake. Either charging me twice, not taking the sale price, or something was mispriced. And, usually, when I bring it to their attention, they argue with me.
