So Im a SAHM and still BFing my 16m old. However, I feel like he might be starting to self wean. Just this weekend we dropped a feeding (now down to three) as he really didnt need the 4th, just a habit. Now for the last two nights he hasnt really wanted to nurse, has been fussy. He woke last night and I nursed him to sleep for the first time in a long time. I cried when he feel asleep. I know..too emotional!
For those of you that had a self weaner, what was it like? How long was it? And does this seem like that?
Opinions please!
Re: For those that had a self weaner...
At the beginning of his 9th month he started to bite. Every time I would try for about a week he would still bite. He was weaned in about a week.
I'm not on here much, mostly a lurker, but my DD just self weaned about a week and a half ago. She would nurse for about 10 seconds and then scream. We were down to 2 nursing sessions and 1 bottle of expressed milk and she started screaming with the late afternoon session. When she started screaming at the morning session for a few days in a row I decided to just not offer it and she hasn't asked for it. I'm finally almost completely dried up now. I, too, was very emotional when she decided to give it up even though my plans were for her to self wean. We had moved to another state with no family or friends close (about 2 hours away) so it made me even more sad to not get in our cuddly nursing sessions. It sounds like your LO is starting to self wean. BTW I'm also a SAHM and my DD was just over 13 months when she weaned. I'm jealous that your LO lasted until 16 months!
My two angels
It started just like you described: Zack would be fussy and distracted when I would try to nurse him. Part of it was a supply decrease due to pregnancy, I think, but mostly he was just ready.
I stopped pumping at a year, so he was daytime-weaned at that point. I think we went to just morning/night around 13-14 months. We dropped to just one nighttime feeding around 14.5 months and he was totally done by 15 months. That last feeding, I had to really fight to get him to nurse, so I knew it was time.
I had DH put him to bed the first couple of nights without nursing and Zack didn't even notice the change.
