Colposcopy

Hey Ladies, I had a routine pap last thursday, they checked the heartbeat and everything and said baby was doing good. Today i got a call from my nurse saying some of my cells came back abnormal and my dr. wants to schedule a colposcopy and i go on march 8th. Needless to say i am freaking the heck out as a first time mom. I am so worried that this will cause something to happen to the baby, before this i have been having a great pregnancy (knock on wood) no m/s or anything like that. I've been researching it a little this morning and some good, some bad. Any help????

Re: Colposcopy

  • I had a colposcopy about 5 years ago and it wasn't a big deal. They just use an instrument (colposcope?) to look at the cells on your cervix and if they see abnormal cells, they do a small biopsy (not much at all-certainly not enough to concern you about the competency of your cervix.) I was a little crampy after, but it wasn't a huge deal. I would think it wouldn't be much different during pregnancy, but this is my uneducated opinion. I don't think the doctor would do it if there was any risk. For me, I had mild dysplasia that went away on its own. If there's a problem, I think they'll just wait to treat it until after you have LO. Good luck!

  • I had one a couple years ago. I was sooo scared but it wasn't bad at all! They have to put a vinegar type stuff on your cervix when they are looking which was the only uncomfortable part... then if she see's anything to biopsy it is more of just a little scrape. when they told me biopsy I was thinking a big chunk would come out but its not that at all! I was at medium to high risk for cervical cancer but it cleared on its own and now I am perfectly healthy so even if it comes back with scary results it can get a better on its own! If you see a little bit of blood after dont worry its ok!

  • I've had a colposcopy before, and while it certainly isn't comfortable, they are only taking cells from the outside of your cervix, so it won't hurt the pregnancy.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • My sister in law is 6 months pregnant and had to have one done just a few months ago while she was pregnant and everything is ok. I also had one but not while I was pregnant, like the other girls said it's a little uncomfortable but dealable.

I had a colposcopy 10 years ago after a abnormal pap and the biopsy showed nothing.  I haven't had an abnormal pap since.  It was just a fluke!  Most women of childbearing age have a scare like this once in their lifetime.  The odds are with you that its absolutely nothing!

    T&P to you and yours.
