Job vent: how do you handle frustration in the workplace?

I've been unhappy at my job for a very long time, but with the crappy economy I haven't felt motivated to find a new job. I've started applying, but I'm not finding much out there.

In the meantime I'm getting increasingly angry with my boss. She's always been a b!tch but lately she jumps down my throat for no reason. I'm grossly underpaid for the work I do and there is no room for growth in the organization so my only option is to leave. Every time I get an email from her I want to write back something nasty. I'm finding it very difficult to control my anger towards her.

I need some tips - how do you handle frustration in the workplace?

  • I don't have any advice - just hugs

I'm in the same boat - I've been so unhappy ever since the company went thru the merger (and my mgmt team is from the "other" company).  My boss has had an agenda to "manage me out" for a LONG time now.

I should've gotten out last year, but I got pregnant and went on leave instead (which made them all that much happier with me).... now I'm back and it just sucks all around.

Manage me out - this describes my experience perfectly. If you could call my boss's passive-agressiveness a management style. Ha!

I'm sorry you're dealing with the same thing.

  • Well, my frustrations aren't so much with my co-workers as with my clients, so my approach may not apply.  We basically curse and eat chocolate a lot...

I remember telling you back when we were labor buddies that I was SO jealous that you worked for yourself. Still applies!

Not to brag, but you should be jealous!  I can NEVER go back to working for someone else.  Never!!

  • i have a coworker who can be absolutlely miserable to be around.  she's Jeckyl/Hyde.  sometimes very pleasant and personable and jovial, and other times walking around slamming doors, snapping at everyone, and treating us like crap.  especially our office manager.  she is so disrespectful - yells at her, basically tells her she's stupid, etc.  and our office manager has no balls, so lets it slide.  our boss works from home and is the office manager's brother so he has no idea and i think the manager doesn't bring it up w/ him b/c she doesn't want to look bad.  it's pathetic.

no advice on how to deal...i contemplated quitting for a long time back a couple of years ago when i was her main target, but lately she's my best bud and has it out for another coworker in addition to the office manager.

it's really a crazy situation.  you'd be appalled if you witnessed it.

(incidentally, she went through 3 rounds of IVF with no luck and then decided to quit trying (she's 45 now)...i have to wonder how much that has to do with it.  although that was 4-5 years ago and some of this is definitely just her nature.

This is my boss to a T. Sometimes she's super sweet to me, appreciates what I do, etc. and then other times she's rude and condescending and just plain b!tchy.

I'm sorry you're dealing with crap, too.

  • I drink...oh wait...i USED to be able to blow off steam that way..  Stick out tongue

Anyways...can you sit down and have a conversation with your boss?  maybe figure out a way to word things so that you are bringing her ridiculousness to her attention, but phrasing it so that you are being a team player...lame example:

"Hey bitchy boss, I've noticed that you seem extra stressed out lately, is there anything that I can help you with to ease your load?"

Aw man, that sucks.  At least she's your boss and has the authority to do so...can you imagine you acting like that to her??  That's what's so f'd up about my coworker.
