Sleeping on an incline question

Asher is on Zantac for reflux.  He abruptly started symptoms after his 2 month appointment so I took him back to the doc after a week of persistent symptoms. The meds are helping a lot.  He had been getting fussy after eating, lots of wet burps and bursts of crying like he was in pain. All symptoms now gone.

He was always a good sleeper and then he needed to be propped up to sleep or he would wake frequently.  I have swaddled him in his car seat and then put the car seat in his crib.  He sleeps on an angel care monitor and surprisingly it still works when he is in the car seat - his breathing must move the seat just enough for the sensors. Even though his symptoms are pretty much gone he hasn't done well sleeping on his back again.  Is there a better or easier way to get him to sleep on an incline?  Propping the mattress is a no-go since he rolls down like a log in his swaddle.  I would rather not have him in the car seat....so?  Should I think about asking the doc about upping his meds if he still has trouble being on his back?

Re: Sleeping on an incline question

  • Have they upped his meds while his weight increased?  I noticed with DD that our family doc wasn't keeping up with the dose, and as soon as the pedi adjusted it for her weight she was better.

We had trouble too with the mattress thing.  I tried propping up her mattress for a while but we had the sliding problem as well.  Then again I held her most of the night anyway b/c she didn't sleep so it didn't really matter much in the end.   The only thing that ended up helping DD a lot was when she figured out tummy sleeping, she did better on her tummy than her back.  Sorry I'm not much help.

I also read an article on CNN about NOT letting babies sleep in car seats for long periods of time. If his head isn't back and slumps over, it could block his air passage. This happened to a 6 month old I believe. So head control wasn't an issue.

I think think C has mild reflux... when she sleeps on her back she wakes herself up all.the.time and spits up.

It's okay :0)  I have read that too but when I do put him in the seat it is in the reclined position if that makes any sense...technically he is sleeping on an incline.  Basically his head is back and it can't go forward because the seat is not locked in the upright position.  I still don't think it's an ideal sleeping situation but I feel comfortable until I figure something else out....preferably a way to get him on his back again!!

The rock and play has been a God send. I would look into it... I know it was on clearance for like 24 bucks at target at one point because they were getting new ones. May have to call around and see if some targets still have it in stock. But seriously, it would really help A sleep and he is in his back technically..  Stick out tongue

  • DS slept in the bouncy seat for seven months due to reflux.  Then he didn't sleep for a couple weeks.  Then he wanted to be in the crib.  The transition really wasn't that bad, even at that age.  It might be worth letting him sleep in the car seat/bouncy seat/whatever for now.  JMO.  I did put the bouncy seat on the ground instead of in the crib, though.  That way if he ever did manage to somehow make it over the side of the bouncy seat, he wouldn't get stuck between the bouncy seat and the rails of the crib.

Also, I know you said the AngelCare monitor is working for you, but we switched to the Snuza Go.  We love it approximately 1,000% more.

I have never heard of the Snuza Go....just looked it up.  Very cool!!!  I do have the little lamb bouncer, it may be a better option for keeping him "flat" but inclined, rather than his butt being downward in the carseat.  I may try that and just buckle him in.
