Trying to Get Pregnant

How effective is the "pull-out" method?

I'm curious b/c I stopped BCP over a year ago, so H and I have been using the pull-out method ever since. We just started TTC last month with no luck.

So I'm kinda wondering if the pull-out method actually works, or if I should be concerned about fertility.

I'm trying not to worry about it with just 1 month of actually TTC. Thoughts?

According to Dr. Google - the pull out method is about 70% effective. You have only been trying for 1 month, have patience, and GL to you.

I wonder the same thing - MH and I have used the "pull out" method for the past 4 years....we started TTC in Nov and it occurred to me that maybe the fact that I didn't get PG over the past 4 years was actually problem (even though we were TTA)

MH insists he was 100% accurate though, lol!

Think of it this way, you only have about a 20% chance of conceiving on any one cycle, and that is when YH is...ahem "giving it his all", so think of how less likely it is to get PG when using the pull out method.

There is no reason to worry.

If you weren't convinced of its accuracy, why were you using it as birth control?

Well...I have an adorably cute 2 1/2 year old that "disproves" the pull-out method.  However, as a teenager, I was having unprotected sex for 2 years with my boyfriend (also using the pull-out method) and we never got pregnant.

If the pull out method is indicative of fertility issues, I've got a big problem - we used that method (effectively) for the past eight years.

I think I understand what you're getting at.

MH and I used "pull and pray" for the past approx. 6 years. He insists that he was 100% dead on with this. But, you hear of SO many women saying that is how they got KU.  So, when we started ttc around August, I was wondering the same thing. Like, hmm I wonder how I DIDN'T get KU all that time???

I do NOT think there is any reason to worry about anything at this time, after one month, that is for sure, but I wanted to let you know that I too "wonder" the same thing.

All I have to say is, DH and I used the pull and pray for almost 2.5 years. I went on bc to regulate my periods for our wedding. Forgot to take it ONE DAY and DD came along 9 months later. So, that's all I have to say on it.

I am in the same boat as you.  My husband and I used withdrawal as birth control and never had any scares.  This past month was our first month of trying to conceive with no luck.  I can not help but wonder if the reason we never had any accidents was because there is something wrong.

However, like some previous posters said you only have 20% of getting pregnant each month.  So it is actually pretty difficult.  I know I constantly have to remind myself of the the facts to keep from jumping to conclusions and having a freak out.

    Good luck to you!

he he he... this is funny.

and i also want to know, if you weren't sure it would work, why did you use the pull out method as birth control? did you not care if an accident came along? if so, then that's totally fine, but if you really really really didn't want to get PG in that time it's pretty irresponsible to do a technique that you haven't researched and checked if it will even work...

Honey, you are going to need a little bit more patience.  1 month is nothing to be worried about.  and like PP stated, the pull out method is only about 70% effective...  I'm not really sure what that has to do with you be TTC now, but there ya go...

I was using the pull-out method after about 10 years of birth control and medical reasons for stopping.

I started using the pull-out method AFTER we got married, so I did NOT need a 100% effective method. If we would have conceived, that would have been wonderful. However, I was not TRYING to conceive. Now, I am trying.

Thanks for those who understand what I'm getting at. I'm not worried after 1 month of trying - but wondering if using this method is actually like 13 months.

Apparently not so, it is rather effective, it looks like. I actually found one stat that said it can be about 90% effective.
