Re: Formula

  • I have two cans of different kinds.

Why is she looking for handouts if I can ask?

  •  Not everybody can afford formula.. times are hard for everybody..

Has your friend tried contacting WIC or her state to get some help? Even local churches and stuff like that. There's PLENTY of help out there for people with babies who need it. Most organizations will ESPECIALLY help with things like formula for a baby.

yes but if you knew wic, they only give 6 jars/mo after 5 mo old

it was a simple request that i didn't think would get negative feedback.. apparently i was wrong

of course. But she doesn't know that yet. Does she assume she can't?

(ps: i'm not a bfing crazy person. I just know it can save her a ton of money)

Ditto checking into wic. Here you get, I think, 5 big cans a month. That could get her through (or maybe she'd only have to buy one a month) We only use 5 a month.

  • This isn't negative feedback! People are trying to help. And when you look for handouts for someone, it helps to provide a bit of a story. There are many people on these boards who need help, so it helps to make the person jump out (like maybe they just lost their job? Or a fire burned down their house?) I don't know the story.

    Just trying to help.

Unless you're referring to her already having a medical reason why she's anticipating not being able to, I don't see why she'd have any reason to assume she won't be able to.  I currently FF my DS, so it's not like I'm anti-formula, but if I had a bunch of formula sitting around during the first few weeks, I probably would've caved from the feeding frustrations and switched over much earlier than I did.  Like PP's mentioned, there are great ways to get formula fairly inexpensively or at no cost.  We use Target brand which is pretty cheap and goes on sale from time to time.  Also, our pediatrician has tons of sample-sized containers (they're still quite big).  We've been lucky enough to not have to worry about affording formula, but I know that the pedi would be more than willing to help her patients if the need was there.

yes but if you know anything about wic, you know that they give a small amount of it after 6 months she was asking for help from me. there is nothing wrong with that. and your CAPS rampage was unnecessary.

There was no rampage. You need to relax!

And 5 cans is a lot! Not a small amount. And she's already worried about 6 monts? Thats 8 months from now. It will all work out :D She can also come on here and trade formula checks. Thats a great way to save money, too.

  • some stories are kind of personal thats all. it was a sipmle question of asking for help thats all. but i'll just take the post down and ask some friends,,,which i thought is what this was lol guess i was wrong thanks though!

  • Just wanted to also mention- my DS is not a big formula eater, but we only go through 5 cans a month.  I really don't know much about WIC, but I assume they also provide cereal and baby foods?  If so, 5 cans a month along with solids feedings should be enough and if not, it might require the purchase of 1 additional can but I can't imagine much more than that.  Also, if she BF's in the beginning, she can still get the formula checks and start stocking up of formula.

A friend of mine is on WIC and just had her baby 2 weeks ago.  She is trying to bf, but when she was asked from WIC if she was bf'ing or ff'ing she told them ff'ing because she figures she wants to have the formula incase she needs it or for when she switches over.  I'm not one for lying, but having backup formula is probably a good idea.
