Breast Pump

Just wondering what everyone thinks...

Would it be weird to buy a breast pump off craigslist?

All things included is about a $380 value being sold for $100...

What do you think? Would you contact the seller?

Re: Breast Pump

  • Eh I'm a germ a phobe So no. If it's never been used in a sealed package all parts are sealed then maybe.

  • I think it depends on the pump...

If it is the one where milk goes directly into the bottles, then that's much easier to sterlize and I'd say go for it.

If it has to go through tubes and collect elsewhere, maybe not the best.  I got lucky with my insurance, or I would've borrowed one/bought used most likely.  Craigslist is amazing.

  • Yuck. I'd only buy used from someone I knew very well. And I'd still change out all the parts.

  • It is the Medela Pump In Style Advanced. I am almost positive the milk goes right in to the bottles.

I'm a biologist and not a germaphobe... things can easily be sanitized.  Especially if it looks in good shape/clean when you look at it.  Why spend the extra $200+?

    Good luck!

ETA:  was that the style women here were getting at Target for $100 on clearance?  Might be worth calling your local one and just spend the same for new.

  • that's tough. I'd be tempted, but I would DEFINATELY be buying all new parts for it and basically just using the motor ...

  • When I took our breastfeeding class the only pump they recommended with the Ameda Purely Yours-they said the Ameda brand is truely the only brand that does not pass milk anywhere but the tubing and that's can easily be replaced. She said the medela reps can not prove theirs does the same. So, imo unless it's a ameda I would not buy used!

Our insurance company covered most of ours so don't be affraid to check yours!

  • Insurance won't cover unless I have a premie. Thanks for the advice ladies! I really appreciate it!

Agreed, I don't understand the "ewww!" mentality for buying only new items that have come in contact with some else's milk.  As long as each part can be cleaned and sanitized, that's the most important thing.

The one thing I would worry about is the warranty. It would suck to spend $100, bring it home, have it break after one use and you can't return it.

I take BFing very serious. I think its more the culture in my family. So a pump is something I would spend whatever needed on. I would splurge on the pump and pinch pennies elsewhere. I'm deciding on the PISA or Freestyle. The freestyle is currently winning.... I still have to call my insurance and see what/if the offer any reimbursement

No, Medela's pumps are open system so the milk (bodily fluid) can back up into the motor.

I would hesitate to share a pump with my sister much less a complete stranger.

  • I am pretty open about this subject and I would never buy a pump from a stranger. I have a medela PIS so I know that the milk has never backed up and gone into the motor. Like pp it is an open system and could back up into the pump or even went into the tube. My mother bought mine so I didn't have to make this decision. Most people wouldn't not use one from a relative or close friend but I would be okay with doing that if they told me it never backed up and i bought all new parts using just the motor. The tubes are about 12 inches or so and you can stop the milk before it reaches the motor and if it did back up you would see it and have to clean the tubes afterwards. This was all stuff my lactation consultant went over with me when my Mom got me the pump. Proper care and how to carefully use it so you don't ruin the motor etc. But I wouldn't trust that someone on Craigslist wouldn't lie about it.

  • Get the Medela Freestyle from Target.  It's new and on sale for $94.  I just got it and I'm excited.  This way you don't need to worry about the fact that it is used.

Details on how to get the pump for $94 are on Nurseries and Baby Gear board.  It's easier than you think.

Edit: The Medela freestyle pump is originally $380.
