Spelling and pronuciation help

We have talked abut naming our daughter my-ah (phonetic).  To me this name is traditionally spelled Maya (my preference).  DH and his parents completely disagree with me and are telling me that no one will ever pronounce her name correctly.  I am not a fan of crazy alternative spellings, but I am curious to know how others would spell this name or what the traditional spelling would be.  They have told me that this name should be spelled Miya (Mia to me), or Myah (a little to trendy seeming to me).  Let me know your thoughts :)

  • I completely agree with you-Maya is the only way that I would think to spell that name. Miya sounds like me-yah, and Myah looks made up.

  • I think you are right and your family is crazy! I'd go with Maya.

I agree with you that Miya looks more like a creative spelling of Mia and Myah seems like your trying too hard to be "different" or it could also be a creative spelling of Mia. I think people would have a harder time with those spellings than Maya.

  • I'm with you on this. Maya is how I've seen it. What about Mya?

I agree with this. I just want to add that my first instinct is to pronounce Myah as one syllable.

  • I watch a little girl and she spells here name Maya. I don't think it's hard for others to see how it is pronounced. No one has had trouble with it since she was born.

  • I know two people with this name and they both spell it Mya. I think Maya looks more appealing then any other spelling. As far as Miya goes, I would pronounce it like Mia as well.

  • You are correct...I think Maya is the least confusing way to spell the name.  Another way I have seen is Maia.
  • My best friend is named Maya and she has spent 30+ years with people always saying it correctly. I think Miya or Myah look ridiculous.

  • Maya is the most traditional spelling and I don't think b people would mispronounce it.  I do know a "Miah" but  hers is spelled that way because her dad is "Jeremiah". Not fond of the creative spelling but I get why they did it. Mia is pronounced "Mee-uh"

  • I knew someone who named her daughter "Maya" and found that no one pronounced it correctly (apparently, no one else studied the Mayans or something?). They ended up changing the spelling to Mya and have never had a problem since. That being said, I firmly believe that Maya is the appropriate spelling. Your DH and his parents are completely wacky with their spellings.

  • Maya Angelou is the most famous person I can think of with this name...and she spells it Maya.  That is the spelling I would go with.
  • Maya is how I would spell it.  Mya looks monosyllabic to me.

  • I prefer Maya or Maia.  Even though I "know" Mya is pronounced the same, my brain always wants to stumble and pronounce it mmm-YAH. Big Smile The alternative spellings your H and his family are suggesting are horrible, IMO.
