Flannel Frustration...

So I went to JoAnne's today and bought a couple of really cute flannels to make some wipes with.  Came home and washed them and when I pulled them out of the wash, they had unraveled like crazy and gotten all tangled together.  I can't imagine how much fabric I lost.  I cut of wads of unraveled fabric.  Is this normal?  Should I not have washed the fabric beforehand?  I am so frustrated about this! :/

  • Totally normal.  You can always cut the ends of fabric with pinking shears to help avoid this in the future.

  • Thanks.  I'm clearly a total n00b with all of this sewing/crafting stuff and I was so heart broken when I pulled the material out of the wash.  After cutting off all of the frayed stuff though, I didn't lose as much as I thought.

  • Mine unraveled quite a bit too, but I didn't loose too much.  It seemed worse than it was, but was still annoying.  Definitely has to be washed and dried before sewing, since cotton shrinks.
